Back in the 30's and 40's was an American pulp by the title of Doc Savage. The stories (181) were often quite fantastic and the author would often base them on fact. The Dec 1936 issue was called "The Vanisher", about a machine that could make people disappear. Lester Dent, the author claimed that a scientist had produced such an effect by bombarding himself with a certain type of radiation.
