I was bored last weekend, so I made a couple of videos on Operation Ivy, and uploaded them to YouTube. Operation Ivy was the testing of two atomic bombs, one fusion, the other fission based. Enjoy! biggrin.gif :

Ivy Mike (Fusion Bomb)
Ivy King (Fission Bomb)

Nice work, sir. sad.gif

Truly good choice of accompaniment. It would have to be in a minor key. Moving. I heard cello at the beginning, before I clicked 'more', and thought it might be you. smile.gif

Bookmark so I can watch these videos at home tonight (I don't have speakers here at work)

Going off topic here... Do you have any audio or video of yourself on cello? I finally got to hear my 13 year old friend play her cello yesterday. She made me cry it was so beautiful. She wants to be first chair in the Seattle Symphony some day. Watching her play yesterday I thought of you....

I do have a few clips of myself, but I'd love to hear your friend's playing. Could you email an audio clip?

She's aiming for first chair? It's great that she's setting her sights so high. By 13 most kids find it a chore to even pick up the cello, let alone practice.

Me, too! Maybe put 'em on flipdrive?

Gehn,
I just saw your clips,,,
What to say,,, I feel like I just came home from a funeral now.
Very moving, Good work. (don't do it again),,,,

My thoughts are, How many times was someone standing with their hand on the big red button during the cold war, just a second or two away from pushing it. I grew up in the 70's. I had allot of "I don't care" back then because I just knew that any minute now some jackass might push that button and there was nothing we could do about it.

I need a drink. sad.gif

Darren
Gehn,

I watched through your clips without sound (I did not want to wake the dead), anyhow, according to your clips, the USA developed these bombs in an attempt to deter any would be aggressor. On a time line starting from the end of WW2 can you guess who the aggressor might be?

Lets me see now, we have President Truman pulling Mc Arthur out of Korea, by the scruff of his neck, because Mc Arthur wanted to use such weapons on Mr China.

And as you know, I can at will, increase the time line towards Vietnam and the Cuban crises, but for now, lets just see if everyone can figure out who the main aggressor is.

Cheers

Hey Paul,

Don't forget, Mr USSR's missiles work very well, in fact I commend on excellent engineering building his missile fuse with springs, tent pegs, washing line pegs and elastic bands that fray in time, and of course chewing gum.Clearly some strict on time maintenance needs to be undertaken here, don't you agree?
A while back, I saw Fart site with Kip Thorn's exposa on the theory of stress/strain, I'm not quite sure but I think that elasticity theory consists of 9 dimensions?

This proves Kip Thorne to be fake of real science, play with dice Kip, its part and parcel of how the universal laws of random generators work.

Any American wanna play with Mr Putin?

Cheers

Thanks for watching my vids, everyone smile.gif .

@Darren
The purpose of Operation Ivy was to basically to upgrade the fleet of American nukes. The "main aggressor" was the USSR. Their nuclear program was beginning to become a threat, and the US needed something to match it.

@paul h
Being born in 1993, I didn't experience any of the cold war. But I often wondered if someone could actually push the button, and be responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths. I guess now I know that some people are, and were, able to "push the button" Now I'm starting to feel depressed... sad.gif .

Ron
Hi All,
Hi Gehn, I'll have to watch your videos at home (no time (or speakers!) here at work. I'm looking forward to it. I read the book "The Making of the Atomic Bomb", and, although I've become quite the pacifist since my days in the military, I found the science that went into making both Fat Man and Little Boy (and the Trinity test device) and incredible work of physics. Again, all politics aside, from Rutherford to Meitner to Fermi (and of course the fathers of physics of that generation), It was an (excuse the pun) explosion of knowledge which, I'm happy to say that so far we've been able to keep at bay.
Thanks again,
Peace,
Ron

Darren - you are missing the best part without the music! Well, at least if you can appreciate classical music.

It was a very nice selection for the video, and very well timed. Very sobering video Gehn. And well done!

(Ron you sound like me. I had to kick they2 off the computer last night so I could watch the video. I don't have speakers at work either.)

Hey Gehn,

So you reckon the USSR was the aggressor hey?, well that's very interesting, I realise you are young and unlike some others here, I do not hold that against you. The fact is, you have still quagmire of things to learn, by default that you young and still in school, am I right?. Hell, don't worry about it, we all go through it and as I have already said else where, we learn from our mistakes which become the past.

Now, this cold war history thing, care to start a thread on what really happened in Korea and/or Vietnam?

Just in case you don't believe me, although my cold war history is a little rusty, the USA was up to his neck in crap and required a 'get out clause', so a peace deal was reached in France on all sides and the USA pulled out, but and I must stress this, the USA was very very bitter and continued to bomb North Vietnam long after the USA had reached a peace deal. In fact, the USA dropped more bombs on Vietnam than was ever dropped, on all sides, during WW2. Not only that, the USA sprayed jungle/vegetation destroying chemicals all over Vietnam and still to this day, no jungle grows. Care to enlighten me and world who the main aggressor is?

In fact, why not take holiday to Vietnam and talk to some Vietnamese war veterans and then once you've done that take a trip to the USA and talk to some American Vietnam war veterans just so you can weigh up both sides and get a fuller picture, okay?

Cheers

Gehn has it right. And further, age and wisdom are not synonymous. The Soviet Union was not some sort of peaceful giant. The Soviet Union signed a Non-Aggression Pact with Nazi Germany. They became an ally only after Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa. By some estimates Stalin was responsible for the murder of approximately thirty million of his own people.

Our attaining of nuclear weapons before the Soviet Union prevented another world war.

Thanks for correcting me. I'm always glad to learn more.

I looked up the subject on Wikipedia, and found out more facts about it - all of which point to you being right. The most interesting one was that the Vietnamese Negotiator refused a Nobel Peace prize for the Paris Peace Accord because he believed that peace still did not exist in Vietnam.
