Strange! Humans Glow in Visible Light
livescience.com – Wed Jul 22, 10:32 am ET

QUOTE
The human body literally glows, emitting a visible light in extremely small quantities at levels that rise and fall with the day, scientists now reveal.

Past research has shown that the body emits visible light, 1,000 times less intense than the levels to which our naked eyes are sensitive. In fact, virtually all living creatures emit very weak light, which is thought to be a byproduct of biochemical reactions involving free radicals.

(This visible light differs from the infrared radiation - an invisible form of light - that comes from body heat.)

To learn more about this faint visible light, scientists in Japan employed extraordinarily sensitive cameras capable of detecting single photons. Five healthy male volunteers in their 20s were placed bare-chested in front of the cameras in complete darkness in light-tight rooms for 20 minutes every three hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for three days.

The researchers found the body glow rose and fell over the day, with its lowest point at 10 a.m. and its peak at 4 p.m., dropping gradually after that. These findings suggest there is light emission linked to our body clocks, most likely due to how our metabolic rhythms fluctuate over the course of the day.

Faces glowed more than the rest of the body. This might be because faces are more tanned than the rest of the body, since they get more exposure to sunlight - the pigment behind skin color, melanin, has fluorescent components that could enhance the body's miniscule light production.

Since this faint light is linked with the body's metabolism, this finding suggests cameras that can spot the weak emissions could help spot medical conditions, said researcher Hitoshi Okamura, a circadian biologist at Kyoto University in Japan.

"If you can see the glimmer from the body's surface, you could see the whole body condition," said researcher Masaki Kobayashi, a biomedical photonics specialist at the Tohoku Institute of Technology in Sendai, Japan.

The scientists detailed their findings online July 16 in the journal PLoS ONE.

Ok, so the bold stuff is what I find interesting. I am sorry, but I don't wish to write an essay on this or what it means. I am more interested in hearing what other people think about stupid stuff like this. I know it's just news, but I don't know how many people have heard/read about it and what they think about it. I don't want to force any thoughts I might have about this into someones response, so I keep it simple and vague. I don't want to corrupt an opinion with my own.

Would it be possible to give the link to the original article?

It is not the first time I heard something like this.

It's common knowledge that the human body emits a lot of infrared light, it's no surprise that a few higher-energy photons get thrown in.

The principle is that as something gets hotter, the frequency of the emitted light increases. That's why metal glows when it's hot.

Right, but why does the face emit more "light" then say the chest (near the heart) where there is more ... activity? You lose more heat through your head/scalp than face. That's why when I camp I wear a beanie, but I don't cover my face. I would think that more light would come off the "head" than the face. I don't know, I just think it's weird/interesting. If you ever take a hunter's safety course, they will tell you if your hands are getting really cold to put them on your crotch to warm them.
Lol ... I wonder if they did this totally nude ... would the crotch "glow" brighter than the face? Lol ... I know stupid, but how stupid is it really?

They have a frozen dead guy days festival. It's pretty famous. I want to catch it next year. Trying to find a Job in Boulder so I can move out here. Great place, never a dull moment. I don't know the guys name, I am bad with names, but he is actually cryogenic-ally frozen (from what I gather). They have something they call Grandpa's Blue Ball ... lol.

It's because the face has a great deal more blood near the surface of the skin. Your blood is what makes your skin warm. Ergo, the face is warmer.
Meem
I'm not trying to be asinine/prickish or w/e, I would just like to know where your basis for saying the face is warmer than say the forehead or crotch? Are there any studies you could point me to?

Because the skin of the face is warmer. More blood flow through it.

Untrue. Your hair is a pretty good insulator. Unless you don't have any, in which case it is true due to the simple fact that you have more scalp than face.

That may be so, but for those of us with more knowledge of outdoorsmanship, the reason is because we like to be able to breathe, see, smell and eat easily, and because the small amount of heat lost through your face when the rest of your body is well insulated is not going to harm you very much unless frostbite is a factor.

Or in your armpits. Although I admit, the crotch is better (more blood flow).

I don't know if it would glow brighter than the face (likely a little bit brighter), but it would glow more brightly than the rest of the body for sure.

I can't figure out what you are trying to say. Are you trying to say that the face is actually not warmer because of some anecdotal wisdom that you've heard? When presented with both evidence and an explanation, you default to anecdotes?

Ski masks, or the lil black masks (ninja mask) those of use with "real" army experience that cover the "face," but none of the vital organs required to be a "real" soldier? Beanies just cover ears. I mean I really don't understand this logic at all. if I wear anything covering or protecting my eyes, ears, nose, mouth, this means I can't use them at all? The military better rethink all of their "face-gear" because if you're right ... it's really stupid to use it and expect to be an"alert/functioning soldier?"

What does that mean exactly? Is this like how you first made indication that I wasn't "really" in the army, and that my mos didn't "really" exist? Do I now need to "prove" my outdoors-man ability to you? Did you ever take hunter's safety? Did they tell you to stick your hands on your face to warm them?

A thermal image video of a nude dancer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKPUanQ4sxw

At the very beginning of the video, the dancer's face clearly shows up warmer than the rest of the body, including the crotch.

I'll take a look at it later, thanks for the "dig." I don't really want to look at it in a coffee shop lol ... might be offensive to someone. Kind of packed in here. The only thing I would question about this before hand, trying to be objective (not an ***), facial "material" is relatively thin and there's much less fat/muscle ratio issues than with any other part of the body? "You could see the veins popping in his forehead?" Know what I mean. Anyhow, time to get some more photos for the old lady. And as a side note, there are no cellphones here. So to communicate with the outside world (aka my wife) I use free internet access. She is at work and not exactly free to chit-chat non-stop with me. So I kill some time here while waiting for replies.

Anyhow, take it easy, give it hard.

(crazy side thought)

what would a hard on look like in the orginal format of this experiment? If it's related to blood/mucsle ... it should look like a light sabre? huh.gif laugh.gif
Think Space Balls.

" I see your schwartz is as big as mine." ph34r.gif
flyingbuttressman
If you want a reason why, it's because humans have evolved into extremely social creatures. One of the primary methods of communication before language was facial expression. That's why we have hundreds of tiny muscles in our faces. These muscles require a lot of blood to operate, ergo slightly warmer faces.

Grammar, meem. You're not making any sense, here.

If you're trying to say that these masks offer an alternative, then I agree. They do. Of course, they make it hard to breath (except exclusively through the mouth, not a good idea in cold weather) and harder to smell anything.

Goggle reduce peripheral vision and can fog up, anything covering the mouth makes it impossible to eat while wearing it and muffles the voice. Covering the nose makes it difficult to smell and breathe through your nose. Soldiers are taught to remove any such gear when they need to take advantage of these facilities. I was trained for cold weather operations, and I can say with absolute assurance that ski masks are only worn when absolutely necessary.

Besides which, there's the fact that all of this facial gear can be uncomfortable and heavy, two disadvantages.

It makes perfect sense, fobbit. You just don't have the brains or the decency to sit there and think about what I write before responding to it.

What does that mean exactly?

It means you obviously lack some level of knowledge of outdoorsmanship, and that there exist others who have this level of knowledge. It also means that I am one of this group.

Your claimed MOS designation doesn't really exist. It's been changed to a different designation.
Besides which, I never indicated that you weren't in the army. I indicated that I doubted you were, and then accepted that you were later. Get over it, crybaby. laugh.gif

If you feel the need to, go ahead.
Of course, you'll fail, because there are a million survival websites out there you could look stuff up on. Nothing you could do or say would prove anything to me, short of flying to my hometown and going camping with me.

It's a requirement for any concealed weapons permit, or hunter's license. I have both.

So then, how does wearing a beanie make me poor outdoorsman? That's what you indicated? You're confusing me. I am not crying about anything, learn the difference between comparison and "whining." If you don't think there's a logical connection between the two instances of your disagreement with me, I can't do anything to make it so can I? That's your right.

I thought it was pretty common sense, it's better to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.

So then, how does wearing a beanie make me poor outdoorsman? That's what you indicated?

1. It doesn't.
2. I didn't say or suggest you were a poor outdoorsman, merely that there exist those who are better at it than you.
The reason you gave for wearing a beanie indicates that you're not a particularly accomplished or knowledgeable outdoorsman. You might still be familiar and experienced with camping, hiking, hunting and other outdoor activities. I'm not passing judgement on your abilities except to say that it's apparent that you do not number among the best.

I think you should take your own advice. I acknowledged that you probably were in the NG weeks ago, yet you're still bringing the issue up. No matter how you spin it, that's whining.

It depends on the situation, but normally this is right.
