The nonprofit organization Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced today that it approved ".XXX" domains and now entered into commercial and technical negotiations with ICM Registry, Inc. to finalize remaining details.

ICANN recently announced the designation of two new sponsored Top-Level Domains, .JOBS and .TRAVEL. Other top-level domains still awaiting a decision from ICANN are .ASIA, .MAIL and .TEL.

The porn-friendly .XXX domains will be available by the end of this year and will cost around $75 per domain name.

They should force all porn off to the new type of domain!

Excusing the ignorant comment above..., I think this idea is awesome. I will be able to block out the entire .xxx on my school networks and keep the kids away from some of the porn industry. Maintaining databases on pornsites is exhuastive work... here is hoping this will make it a little easier.

Wonder who will get www.sex.xxx ?
Satyr
making the domain heading "XXX" will make it easier to lcate porn where it;s not supposed to be, too. For example someone might disguise a porn site as 'MyfaveAutos.com" but if it's "MyfaveAutos.xxx", there will be no denying what's really there. I fully support the idea.

Hey, good thinking. I am sure that the porno industry will be happy to give up all its .com domains as soon as they hear about this exciting development! And kids will know not to type in .xxx as an extension, because little boys just hate it when they accidentally see pictures of naked women. Problem solved!
Guest_Richard
This will not work unless they FORCE all XXX sites to use the new designation. Forcing them won't work until the price is the same as a "regular" domain. When all the XXX sites are using the ".xxx" designation, only then will people be able to block or seek XXX information successfully.

We all need porn in order to survive.

funny how fast the article got so much attention. anything w/ XXX will do it. too bad the movie sucked.

Other than these mindless people whos vocabulary only seems to include a few words, i agree with you all. I think forcing all porn sites to the .xxx domain would only benifit all of us. If they want porn sites, that's fine, they're adults, but give us a way to block it...
porn
why not make it .cum instead of .xxx?

then folks only have to change one letter in their list of porn favorites.
Thinking
We all know that the porn industry means a lot of $ to a lot of people. It's not going to go away. Yet, it is well-accepted that that the internet is extremely hard to navigate without running into pornographic material (even on accident). That is a problem, because children should have the opportunity to freely search for normal facts/ websites on the net without being exposed to porn. Though the porn industry would not gladly give up .com domains, couldn't we just keep them from purchasing any new .com domains, and then eventually complete an exhausted database of current .com's that contain adult material. That way it is a win/win/win:
the porn industry doesn't lose anything; the government doesn't have to attempt to enact or enforce any extremely tough legislation; and those who wish to roam the web without unwanted temptation could do so.

A great idea for Network admins and simplified filtering of site content.

Way Cool! Extremely easy to filter. Even dummies can do it.

Brilliant analysis. I'd like to make a few corrections though.

2+2 = 4 Level A / Level B = .5

I hope that clarifies why .xxx is a good idea.

Piro
I don't know about the rest of you, but to me the article comes off as a 'porn is allowed and encouraged on these .xxx domains, but is not necessarily going to be prohibited from anywhere else'. Granted a lot of porn sites will probably switch to the .xxx domain, but i would say that a decent few will probably stay where they are for whatever reason they decide.

While I agree with the goals of easily being able to avoid porn when I want to, it's not an easy, quick solution.

Who will judge what should be an .XXX site and not a .com?

Leave it up the the porn websites, and low life sites like the old Whitehouse.com will show porn to kids.

Even porn sites that don't target kids, like adults (possible customers) stumbling across them and will not voluntarily shift to XXX if it reduces traffic.

Leave it up the government(s)????
