It is often said that the earth increases mass from space debris. I wonder can the earth also increase mass as a direct result of Photosynthesis? I think that it does but I only have observational evidence to support this. Any thoughts on the matter?
The solar energy in photosynthesis is used to combine water from the ground and carbon dioxide from the air into sugars and oxygen. It just powers the chemical reactions by splitting and forming chemical bonds.
I don't think we have to invoke direct photon -> baryon matter creation, although I am unsure of just how much solar energy is converted directly to mass on earth.

This rings a bell with me. Remember the recent story about the scientist who suggested that neurons might transmit their information through sound? His proposed this because he said that there wasn't enough extraneous heat in the system to justify electrical signal transmission? Maybe the heat is missing in the nerve impulses for the same reason the heat is missing in the photosynthesis reaction he is describing.

tabower25. Good point. Why not join this forum even if you only post rarely? We can use people who are capable of thinking for themselves here.

I was wondering wether photosynthesis effects the temperature of water bodies(increasing evaporation)

If once they understand the process if it could be adapted to man"s biology. Maybe an implant of some kind.
If you pay attention to your peripheral vision you will discover that man can absorb energy via the touch of light upon his eyes - much like the touch of light upon a leaf. This is the meaning of the Green Man symbolism in churches and cathedrals. The energy directly felt from many months practicing awareness of one's peripheral vision is referred to in the Christian tradition as the power of the Holy Spirit. In the Hindu tradition it's Shakti. And recall the little understood biblical phrase: "The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light." ...Enlightenment - the human version of photosynthesis!

Results are from 77Kelvin. Fascinating if they apply at 25Celcius.
Recently we have seen proposed:
Consciousness as quantum effects in microtubules (Penrose)
Origin of DNA as quantum effect
"order' to be found by quantum computers (equivalent to factoring) (Schor)
and in Sci-Fi
Greg Egan: Teranesia :DNA 'repair' selecting for super-evolution
Maybe I'll have to convert to accepting some of these

Here is a quagmire, If photosynthesis uses photons to increase a plants mass and a photon has no mass then how does this happen?
