Liberal Education

The phrase ‘liberal education’ has passed from common usage in our American culture in the last several decades. There are still Liberal Arts Colleges in America but they seem to be less in demand by today’s students. Parents and students want universities and colleges to focus on matters of importance, how to get a good job.

It seems that few recognize that education has an extrinsic and an intrinsic value. The extrinsic value is contained within the fact that a practical education is the key to making a better living.

What is the intrinsic value of learning? Why study history or literature? Of what value is philosophy? Why study logic or how to think when I only care about learning how to build a bridge? Of what value is it for me to become a critically self-conscious thinker?

Everybody comprehends how the intellect can be used to build bridges, or repair a broken bone, or be an accountant but our culture has slowly removed from our comprehension the purpose of an ordered intellect in matters of providing meaning and purpose to life.

It appears that the mind has its own ‘grammar’ (system of rules). Many forms of thinking, i.e. math and music or logic, help us construct a solid structure for exercising this grammar. Other types of knowledge, i.e. history, help us because we understand the present through analogies with the past.

Creativity is greatly enhanced by the cross-fertilization of multiple sources and kinds of knowledge. The broad scope afforded by a liberal education prepares us to see things in ‘the whole’; we see things holistically (in combination, in completeness, not dissected or fragmented).

[b]Some consider that wisdom is “seeing life whole”, every realm of knowledge is necessary for discovering ‘full truth’.[b/]

John Henry Newman wrote that the pursuit of knowledge will "draw the mind off from things which will harm it," and added that it will renovate man's nature by rescuing him "from that fearful subjection to sense which is his ordinary state."

Knowledge is Power, Power is Experience, Experience is Life, and Life is Wisdom, and WISDOM CONQUERS ALL.

Thanks.

Does your answer mean that you reject the definition of wisdom "is seeing life whole"?

Would you say that wisdom is power and comes out of the front of a gun?

Its a contextual statement, and thus precludes to a specific understanding given a certain scenario.

Its flexible.

Haha, yes knowledge (in many instances is wisdom) IS power in many a ways, and today, the gun owns and seals that shut, in an instant i.e. conquers all of the listed elements, very effectively.

As for my definition (if it could be called that) of wisdom,

...."reject [ing-ME] the definition of wisdom is seeing life whole"

If you imply, seeing life as complete, then yes I reject...but apart from that, can you clarify the meaning please.

Thanks.

I dont see how a word like wisdom can be defined with just "one" answer.. I think there are many types of wisdom, and most are removed from the others.. there is the wisdom of Philosophy, the wisdom of age, the wisdom insight, the wisdom that comes with knowledge in areas of "expertiese", the wisdom of the Dao, the list can go on and on..

Wisdom, is like the universe, we can only define portions of it that we understand.. to be able to define all of wisdom, we would have to know it all..

Please, no offence intended .. I just wish to offer a point of view.

1/ Wisdom is knowing when to speak and when not to speak

2/ Power comes from having knowledge and keeping it to yourself.

I suggest 'integrity' is all that divides the one from the other.

Yessiree. Can I just add one thing?
1 (a)It's knowing what to think and what not to think.

That isn't easy. Attaining wisdom is very time consuming, and demands diligence to the task and vigilance for both what is and isn't beneficial to the task, if one expects to reach this in their lifetime. Integrity both serves this and is served well by it; a very healthy catch 22 for the discerning mind.

What does it mean to see life whole?

I think that there are at least three forms of intellection: textual intellection is what we do when we reason in text form, artistic intellection is reasoning in artistic form, and practical intellection is what we do in our day-to-day living.

I suspect that for me to see life whole I must have some significant degree of comprehension in each of the three forms. Since I have almost zero comprehension in the artistic form of intellection I have little chance of being wise.

It does seem to be true that the more you learn the more you find out how little you know. From my distant past I recall a few comments about "knowing nothing" being a good state. A bit of a catch 22 in that for anyone wanting to learn anything.

"Assume nothing" .. might that be a reasonable compromise?

So is trout fishing and horse shoes.

Do you go to the river to trout? Do you go to the farm to buy shoes?

Well...

My initial response was a general, brief, overwhelming, over-simplified, statement as to a definition of wisdom and its pre-contexts, and cognates of one another, not an explanation of "wisdom" at all.

Yes, there is a difference from near enough every mind to every matter, on each question/answer conceived.

So far, everything I've heard here, is wisdom, in different degrees, different interpretative analysis, different shelves of the mind, different circumstances, and contexts, different perceptions, at different depths, but still "wisdom" in one form or many.

Wisdom differs in individuals, just like anything else differs. Its gaining routes differ, and its meaning differs. Its explanation differs, its preface differs, and its perception 'n' application differs to each individual.
(could be similar of course- like human looks)

Ignorance comes with no or less truthful/factual knowledge/experience and makes one STUPID and at most times evil. Whether its intentional or not, is a debate I dont believe any human knows/can judge but the actual doer, objectively.

Wisdom on the other hand, is learning, acquired through every a means possible. But only TRUTHFUL learning. It gives power such as that the devil/satan is supposed to have.
A individual ignorant of how to do good and bad, "truths (in every sphere)" methods and facts is left stupid/foolish, vulnerable to believing/following most things ardently.
A individual knowledgable of good and bad, "truths (in every sphere)" methods and facts, has power to do anything over the less equipped with such knowledge/experience/power/wisdom. Thus can and is very easily swayed, tempted to use this to gain advantage over others, such as dictators do over a ruled nation.

Thus, the ignorance, for unintentional or intentional circumstances/reasons, is left acting/judging/heeding/deeding/speaking wrongly in most matters/instances/situations he/she is unwise/unknowledgable/unlearned in.

For this reason, wisdom in his/her part, is to remain silent.

Ignorance morally/ethically/scientifically/wordly/realistically magnetises BAD traits/attributes and characteristics in one like nowadays kids to a fag.

Enlightenment/wisdom morally/ethically/scientifically/wordly/realistically employs/enhances and attracts GOOD characteristics/traits and attributes in one like bees to honey.

Simply put, I would say wisdom is TRUTH. The more one gathers/understands/employs the more one is wise.
Wisdom is very vast, profound and unfathomable. Many froms of it exists in everything and anything.

Yes, learning (combo of expereince/knowledge) is till we die, because until youve even died...you dont know how it is to in actual fact!

This by no way exhaustive, but only in-breif my side. Im sure others will have more to add.

Thanks.

I also see wisdom as a kinetic mental application. Knowledge is a neutral thing; as such it can be used in a self-serving way, and in a destructive way. I think wisdom implies a virtuous USE of knowledge. If one is extraordinarily knowledgable but that knowledge languishes in non-application, it isn't wisdom. It is the *use* of that extraordinary knowledge in a benevolent way that creates positive advantage; that to me is wisdom.
