This thread is to hear various writers propose what is the difference between our earth, and an alternate world earth on which life does not exist.

That is to say- what mathematical description can be applied to these two different earths, especially one which involves the mathematics of physics.

If this is too hard to imagine, compare the modern earth to the earth before life evolved. What is the difference?

Well the Earth is about 4.6 billion years old. Cellular life was present on Earth about 3.8 billion years ago (bacteria). Cyanbacteria began the slow oxygenation of the Earth about 3 billion years ago, but current levels of oxygen were not achieved until 500-800 million years ago. So then you'd have 100's of millions of years before multicellular life evolved.

So I am interpreting this to mean that a difference that could be physically described would be that there are high levels of oxygen on this earth, and there would not be free oxygen on a dead earth.

but as you point out, simple life forms could also have produced a massive amount of oxygen in the atmosphere, so this characterization is useful from separating a dead earth from an earth with life, it can't distinguish an early earth with simple life vs a modern earth with its multicellular life forms.
