Whales obviously have no vote, and no say in what we do the thier environment. But, should the whales find a way to polute our environment, look out! We would delare open season on them in a heartbeat. How dare the whales assume that the Navy cares about their health and well being. The Navy only cares about its role in warfare. And, guess who has the ruling vote on any issue that affects it?

I am sure navy is very good at keeping the peace from hostile submarines.

But with the new missile and cruise systems that can launch from far away and the use of sonar detecting sensors on the bottom of the ocean planted decades ago I don't think that the navys exercises are anything but a relic of once great military machine trying to keep its paycheck at the expense of whales.

For a physics forum, this place sure is plagued by "save the <insert random animal here>" and "humans are a plague" posts.

Perhaps if EVERYONE respected animals more we would have no wars because of the billions of innocent insects that can be killed by a single artillery bombardment! Screw the humans who die, it's all about the animals!

Human safety and survival > all else. That's how a species works. There are millions of people starving around the globe, dedicate your time and energy to helping THEM. Once we solve world hunger and get rid of famine and war, we can start worrying about whether or not a sonar system may hurt marine life.

I guess they feel the threat from new technology, as that Swedish diesel_sub that sunk a hangar ship under one of their 'war games'. And that is as one could expect :) we are a self centered species mostly involved in short term goals.
