Compared to the human population, is there now more or less war on earth, on average?
I searched online but could not find any statistics about the amount of war today vs hundreds of years ago.

There are less.. and they tend to be less lengthy in duration, which is due to that fact that everything, both people and war materials can be moved much faster than any other time in prior history..
I am defining war to include "cleansing", be it ethnic or what ever reasonl, granted it is more of a one sided war, it does meet the definition of war.. virtually all "wars" in Africa are cleansing being done by Islamists, with only a couple being tribal and/or govt. based..
If you remove the "cleansing", the number is very low, but, war in a conventional sense has changed drastically in the last 60 years, it is generally not Army Vs. Army.. it is now small rebel and or terrorist groups fighting guerrilla wars against govts.
It is my opinion, that future wars of Army Vs. Army will destroy men and machines at a rate no one on this planet has ever imagined.. during the 80's, the life expectancy of a armored crew (Nato Vs. Eastern Block) in a European theater of action, was 38 SECONDS (non nuclear).. today it is far less as proven by the gulf war, and make no mistake, that was a RESTRICTED war.. it is hard to imagine what a unrestricted war would be.

I think you will have to define some more precise time periods. What do you consider modern is the most important. I would have said the last 100 years but it depends how larger sample of history you want to compare. How modern is today?
It may also be hard to work out as the number is also dependent on accurate population numbers for the whole world. Something that you wont know if you go back too far.
I'm screwing this right up for you. Sorry YFH.
