Universal Codec for Music

It would be nice to think that a universal Codec for music could emerge from the babel that exists today; unfortunately, too many companies have too much invested in their own proprietary methods to expect this to happen any time soon. Until several major players jump on the "standards" bandwagon and start to tout the advantages of interoperability, this will remain a laboratory exercise, I"m afraid.
