Three leading British universities: the Imperial College London, Durham University and the University of Sheffield have promised to put in place a new computer chip design. This innovation could mark a rebirth in the industry.
The new chip would be designed with computing nodes linked by nano-wires. This would improve the storage capacity to that of the hard drive at a cheap rate like the memory card. The new chip would see an increase in memory from 500MB to around 100GB.
The transition was initiated after researchers found they could use the spin of electrons to produce the functions of the traditional chips. Previously, computer producers have relied on electronics to design microchips and magnetism for hard disk drives.
