Where does stored nuclear waste go?, www.physorg.com/news115392494.htm

I'm sure the question: "Where does stored nuclear waste go?", keeps many up at night and I suppose it probably comes down to a matter of money. Can it not be found to be profitable to properly reprocess and dispose toxic refuse?

I would think if we have the resources to make use of it, we ought to have the resources to properly dispose it. "Waste not, want not" they say, and surely the practice of making the most use of resources is not a new concept since people have been doing that since the beginning, especially when resources are scarce. As efficient use of resources increases the probability of survival, perhaps proper disposal does as well. Would it not be possible to reprocess such waste into a form that is either more useful or much less harmful? I'm sure ''willingness'' and ''determination'' both have much to do with the solution. Of course there is still the thing about money.

I think the media is very helpful in educating the masses when showing how others have found solutions to such problems.

Question: Would processing waste in a fusion reactor work, or would it just create more nuclear waste?

Keep in mind that this is referring to the Hanford Nuclear Site which was originally established as part of the Manhatten Project during WW2.

Its purpose was to produce the nuclear materials (primarilay Plutonium 239) to make Nuclear Bombs.

It is NOT about Nuclear Waste associated with Nuclear Power Plants.

Wow. That sure helps understand more, since I never heard much about Hanford.

So how do they plan to get rid of that stuff? I'd fire pellets of the stuff back into the Sun. And I don't think it is a preposterous idea.

Just for fun, do a good search on how to make armor piercing ammunition. ohmy.gif

Thanks for the link, Paul. I suppose there are worse things but I can't imagine hurling toxic waste about is a very good idea.

Oh, I never said this was a good thing. But if you need to take out a tank well,,, wink.gif
I am in favor of making batteries out of the stuff. (not for the general public).
