They've found the second intrinsically brightest star. It's so far away and so obscured by dust that it's not very bright from here and not easy to find. The second apparent brightest star is Canopus, which has been known for such a long time that there are at least 4 different theories as to the origin of its name.

Zarkov, has it ever occured to you that convincing folk that yer an alien would be easier if ya:
1. Picked stupider folk than those what tend to frequent physics forums. Even the cranks here see through yer bullsh*t.
2. Did something other than post bullsh*t on an internet forum. Yanno, like actually studyin human physiology, psychology, an history.
3. Had some alien artifacts to show people. Like cold-fusion generators, or warp drives. Hell, even a tricorder would be nice...
4. Stopped tryin to convince folk that yer an alien, an started tryin to convince folk yer not an alien.
5. Showed some proficiency at physics, instead o a total lack o knowledge of physics.
6. Were actually an alien.
?
All ya've done so far is convince us yer a delusional idiot.

Absolutely not. If a reality check is required it would be for yourself. We know that life exists on this planet. We suspect, with good reason, that life may exist on other planets. That, however, is not a certainty. To believe something as an absolute in the absence of any clear supportive evidence is not a wise move.

Not quite (Jerkov targets anyone who doesn't believe he's an alien), but it is indicative of intelligence, rationality, logic and skepticism. wink.gif

There have been lots of credible witnesses who've seen UFOs all over the world...
GeneSplicer
UFOs are just that – unidentified flying object. Are you equating UFO’s with craft from a different world or are you stating that there are many credible witnesses who have seen craft from another world?

There is a difference.
wcelliott
Actually, my own theory on UFOs includes the possibility that someday, humans might develop the technology to travel back in time in craft that make use of Quantum Mechanical principles that we haven't discovered yet, so some of the UFOs might be from Earth, flown by future historians.

I don't have an explanation for UFO sightings, I just don't like to discount eye-witnesses out-of-hand just because they say they've seen something I can't explain.

I just finished watching a UFO program where the whole content of the program was actual flight recordings between airline pilots and Air Traffic Control personnel, and a few similar recordings of astronauts describing UFOs and their behavior. One of the recordings was from a female shuttle astronaut saying, "We're still observing the alien spacecraft".

I generally tend to trust airline pilots and astronauts, even though I realize some of them are nuts. Commercial aircraft usually have two pilots looking out the windshield, and if only one of them saw something, I'd expect the other to speak-up.

QUOTE (wcelliott+Sep 5 2008, 11:16 PM)

And if even one of them is an alien spacecraft, then at least one person knows for a fact that extraterrestrial life exists (and it is then highly likely that FTL travel is possible).

So now all you need do to support this postulate is produce that one eyewitness account, and enough evidence to convince a reasoned skeptic that it was as it appeared to be. Until then, however:
It's not a fact, and we have just as much reason to believe extraterrestrial life does not exist as we have to believe it does exist.
GeneSplicer
Blue Book and other investigations resulted in cases that went unanswered or unsolved, but there seems to be a tendency to jump to conclusions regarding UFOs being spacecraft.

Pilots and astronauts in the end are just people and as fallible as the rest of humanity. There are plenty of cases from NASA where debris reacting to maneuvering thrusters were claimed to be under intelligent control.

Then there are the videos that some claim showed ground-based rail guns firing on a UFO in orbit as recorded by the Space Shuttle.

Because one LIFE exists then there must be others.

Much like

one tree exists, one sun, one planet ...etc therefore it is more likely than not, that if one exists then more exist

earthlings are not special in any way

pathetic that you even think different!

Wrong. If one exists then it is a fact that one exists. The probability of one existing is 1. The probability of a second existing is still undetermined.

Except for those among us who claim not to be from this planet. They're very 'special'.

If you're referring to the idea that there are only a limited number of ways that matter can be organised, then I get where you're coming from - with a universe this big, there has to be life somewhere else. However, they would probably exist so far away that we would never come into contact with them.

You might consider that inertial "information" traverses the universe in an instant. I imagine a point in the future where we could become proficient enough interfacing to the quantum world that we could modulate it in many different ways ... i.e wormholes.
