I've been following the holographic discs for a while. It just seems funny that there's this big war over whether we'll be using HDDVD or Blu-Ray, when the first holographic drives and discs will be sold later this year - with ten times the capacity of either. So while they're all squabbling over who has the better DRM - in order to inconvenience their customers and make the real pirates laugh - a vastly superior technology will be available within months of the new formats being released.

So how long til the new HDDVD players have to be thrown out for holographic drives?

well
i don't know,
hd-dvd and blue-ray are pretty amazing and Sony has already made a HD-DVD player. they also hold a lot of space. 75 - 100 GB
samnas
blue-ray and HD-DVD also support going to the menus while the movie is playing

there a lot of other features which you need to consider

but hvd can hold more quality

???

The disc sounds great, but watt about people who burn CD's will they be able to burn CD's? And, apart from the cost as i read that a 150-200 GB disc will cost aroundUS$100, wat other disadvantage is there to HVD, like will it be scratch protected, or anything else?

these questions are asked in hopes of getting data to aid in my IA. Please respond! biggrin.gif

If these holographic disc are really coming out soon... then i suppose we wil have about 2 years of HD-DVD/BlueRay before they manage to get the price of holographic discs to a reasonable price. It's a shame the industry only looks out for themselves and not the people (you and me) who are actually going to buy the product.

Holographic media has been discussed for about the last 5 years. I'm glad progress is finally getting made, cause I love the idea of backing up my entire computer on a single disk. And tape drives are equally expensive, and harder to store.

Of course, last I heard, the drives themselves were around $1200 and were 14"x8"x6"! blink.gif
