The internet needs a way to help people separate rumour from real science, says the creator of the World Wide Web.
Talking to BBC News Sir Tim Berners-Lee said he was increasingly worried about the way the web has been used to spread disinformation.
The use of the web to spread fears that flicking the switch on the LHC could create a Black Hole that could swallow up the Earth particularly concerned him, he said. In a similar vein was the spread of rumours that the MMR vaccine given to children in Britain was harmful.
Sir Tim told BBC News that there needed to be new systems that would give websites a label for trustworthiness once they had been proved reliable sources.
[LOL]
"On the web the thinking of cults can spread very rapidly and suddenly a cult which was 12 people who had some deep personal issues suddenly find a formula which is very believable," he said. "A sort of conspiracy theory of sorts and which you can imagine spreading to thousands of people and being deeply damaging."

Interesting. A classic internet science forum situation.... what is truth and what is misconception and what is downright lies !!
Absolute Truth will never be known, truth is always subjective, interpretative... even to some extent this applies to scientific truths.
Misconception needs discussion.... in science it may be resolved by an analysis of the available relevant facts. Even so, science does need "fanciful" future projections to be able to explore the probable, the improbable and the desirable...

Sir Tim and colleagues at the World Wide Web consortium had looked at simple ways of branding websites - but concluded that a whole variety of different mechanisms was needed.
"I'm not a fan of giving a website a simple number like an IQ rating because like people they can vary in all kinds of different ways," he said. "So I'd be interested in different organisations labelling websites in different ways".
Currently only 20% of the world's population have access to the web
The Foundation will also look at concerns that the web has become less democratic, and its use influenced too much by large corporations and vested interests.
"One of the things I always remain concerned about is that that medium remains neutral," he said.
Censorship is the new criteria...terrorism, mass hysteria fanning etc can not be tolerated.... LOL, they are a REAL threat to stability... the comfortable status quo
Science has always been censored and many scientists are often censured.
SHAME< SHAME SHAME...GO Dr Strangelove!!!!!
So what are your opinions, pathetic earthlings.....
do you want a muzzle or do you want to be able to slander and degrade at will, make up your own arrogant misconceptions and attack on mass.... indulge in total decadence... much as y'all do on this and other net forums
Democracy is just another name for mass indoctrination.... more often than not the most evil convince and swing the vote...... totally obscene

We could fix that problem simply by removing people like you, who grab on to rumours and half - truths and continue them by trolling with those ideas.

He doesn't even do that, he just makes crap up and runs with it.
If they instituted this sort of system, his own website would get the lowest rating imaginable.

Perhaps we would need some kind of label.
There are some sites that I find very offensive and ugly.
For example those who cater to those needing "snuff" movies date-rapes and showing failed suicides accidents even murders etc, just for its "gross'" nauseating values.
And it will be young testerone filled guys primally that will look at those, believing that it will make them more of a 'man'.
On the other hand we desperately need a open Internet.
And that means that those sites will keep 'dropping up' as 'a new sicko are born every second' ( paraphrasing here :)
For now I see a greater problem at the horizon than that.
If I'm right in Canada some Internet providers (ISP) already are or shortly will be trying to sell us Internet-connections based on geographic location.
And there is a lot of interest from others ISP:s to see if the consumers will accept it.
Like for one amount you will get only Canada, a higher will give you America, and a third both -Plus- :) Europe etc etc.
That truly sucks.
It's like Chinas little bureau that constantly 24/7 censure what the Chinese will see on their screens.
But now those ISP:s hopes that you will pay pay for not 'self-censuring' yourself.
It's the opposite from what Internet's Idea once was.
Information flowing freely.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” Einstein
Science fiction Science fact..... is there a difference ?
It seems modern "scientists" have dug a hole for themselves
ALL must be peer reviewed...if not it is pseudoscience !!! LOL
and so the whole world of modern science collapses in a shite heap
So where does imagination come from... was it written at the beginning of time ?
and why does it, given time, prove so accurate ?
Questions that "scientists" never ask, for all else is rumour
LOL
So you say peer review depicts real science
funny how most of it ends up being at most, only partially correct... and in some cases total fabrication, misleading for hundreds of years.
example Dr E's General Relativity codswallop
I find it very very interesting that among you pathetic earthlings there are some here that know everything... can tell fact from fiction, science from rumour
LOL, yes its true...believe me
In this Age of Universal Madness, everything is possible.... in delusion
I say to those not yet tainted, hold your head up really high, forget the rabble and dream, about all the things the low life can't even see

Trouble with you zarky; you've little to no actual understanding of anything, therefore any comment you add via your festering ill-equipped excuse for a mind must be purely taken with an extremely humongous pinch of derision.
What you sadly profess to as an imagination, is limply based on a foundation of understanding substantially lower than that of a emphatically retarded 3-year olds view-point after a freakishly profound and lengthy duration of laughing gas inhalation.
Do yourself a favour; pull the trigger - spacefuck.

The art experts can't tell ape work from a masterpiece. Are science experts any better?

There's a difference between doing real science and waffling about some random idea that popped into your head five minutes ago.
There's a difference between doing real science and waffling about some random idea that popped into your head five minutes ago.
Don Simus, The art experts COULD tell the difference when art was more representational. I've never seen a chimp paint in Rembrandt's or Monet's style!
But a lot of modern art is solely uniqueness at the expense of aesthetics and some chimps and painting elephants, cats and dogs CAN make "art" that can pass as that done by humans. ((
))
And the "science experts" are better at differentiating between science and rumor. Nothing like the Piltdown forgery would last at all nowadays. I WOULD like to see some kind of accurate rating system for websites. Major universities, the Smithsonian, National Geographic and others would be at the top for veracity and accuracy and answersingenesis.com and others of that ilk would rate near the bottom. It really would help young, easily impressionable minds to sort through the chaff and find the gems of science and learning. The deception foisted on an undiscerning public from sites like answersingenesis.com needs to be addressed and countered at every turn.
And what better way to do it than a rating system. For fairness and freedom nothing would be blocked, but with a properly evaluated rating system, "hits" would be appropriately reduced for bad science, hate mongering sites and tasteless porn.
I wonder how PhysOrg would rate?

Unfortunately for some knowing the wrong answers makes them truly understand the right answers
meaning the accepted "right" answers can be wrong and the so called pseudoscientific wrong answers can be right.....
Science has never been set in stone, science is not consensus,.... and never will be
just because prof so and so said this or that does not mean it is correct
it just means it is accepted by the scientific community. ( and they all can be wrong, and in fact most probably are )
Many earth shattering "ideas" start as an accidental observation.... and may lead to a frontier breakthrough even though all established theory says it is all codswallop.
I know, I have been there.
Science is knowing all options...even the incorrect ones....
History has often shown they were correct (as of now, maybe incorrect tomorrow)
correct, incorrect, correct...etc... depends upon more data
LOL, that's science
this site..... mmmmh, this site has posters that think science is text-books, archaic, medieval ..... I rate this site as absymal
I long for a true science site, where all is examined, and all implications are examined and all "ideas" even "crazy ideas" are evaluated.. and where all disrupting mindsquashed dregs are swiftly dealt with
so that indepth conversations can be achieved.....
from such a place will come the future...y'all live in the past here
this is totally impossible here...
primarily because there are so few really interested posters.. this is a social site for dimwits

Patent System = Peer Review -----> broken
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7632318.stm
and so to for peer review
to set in stone scientific structures does cause thought to be curtailed.
A scientists takes all in, no matter what, grinds, digests, analyses and spits out what does not fit, realising that it may fit next time on regurgitation.
There have been scientists that were convinced that they could extract gold from egg shells........ some are still trying..... but in their failure other scientists know that the amount of gold in egg shells is very low...... LOL
no information is wasted in science...even the most ridiculous ideas can inspire a breakthrough technology
so analyse what is accepted, and what is not accepted and what is probable and what is pure fantasy and grind them all together and form your own opinion, but remember to be willing to change that opinion whenever more reasonable explanations arise... and even those will change,,,,,,
There is only one sure thing in science, and that is change.

Life-saving scientific research is being stifled by a "broken" patent system, according to a new report.
"Blocking patents" are delaying advances in cancer medicine and food crops, says the Canada-based Innovation Partnership, a non-profit consultancy.
The full benefits of synthetic biology and nanotechnology will not be realised without urgent reforms to encourage sharing of information, they say.
The authors offer guidelines for a transition from "Old IP" to "New IP", in which companies, researchers and governments recognise that sharing information is mutually beneficial.
"If we are to turn the atoms of publicly funded discovery into molecules of innovation... we have to make sure research avenues stay open," said the report's lead author, Professor Richard Gold.
"That doesn't mean there will be no patents. It simply means that patents don't become a barrier to early stage research.
To facilitate sharing of information, he believes companies should be encouraged to form "patent pools", allowing them to cross-license their technologies without losing out on royalties.
"Patent offices must get up to speed with new areas of science, so they know exactly how much they are giving away."

Thank you for stating the value of logic, and the need to question everything.
As far as I'm concerned, the majority of so called "Internet directives" involves first; decent people on any format telling the hate mongers to go to hell, then just ignore said pathetic minds. Since the Internet is monitored by the powers that be ANYWAY, and will continue to be, threats should be taken as seriously as threats over the phone, in person, through the mail. That's something for the local police to be notified about.
We need strong legal evaluation and civil rights concerns applied so one is never targeted for political reasons. Remember "tricky Dicky?". On tape he said he wanted the meanest s.o.b. for director of the IRS. Why? Because he stated "I want him to go after our enemies and leave our friends alone". I wish he was the only President to be so driven by such abuse of the constitution, but having spent over 25 years in the U.S. intelligence community I assure you, he was not. Current Presidents just don't allow themselves to be recorded... If you want to keep something secret, there's an old expression; "nothing on paper (or tape)".
I disagree that science is censored, but scientists like my self are human beings. No one likes all to be shown they missed something, or are plain wrong. Peer review is a wonderful, and usually very effective method of testing ones conclusions. As for Dr Strangelove? Some say he was modeled on Dr. Edward Teller, the "father" of the hydrogen bomb. He was a strong proponent in that he knew the the reds would build them, and quite frankly at that time (early 1950's,late 40's) the accuracy of our missiles would have made it likely a missile could hit a target with in a mile, maybe less. We would need far far more fission bombs then we had the needed fissinable material to make. Bombers were more accurate, but much less likely (despite the movie "fail safe" to get through) A fission bombs yield would not have taken out a hardened bunker. Today the yield our nukes are measured in kilotons, few are measured any more in megatons. Why? We can use a cruise or ballistic missile to put one right through your kitchen window...
As for Teller implying Robert Oppenheimer was a communist or anti-American. He was a member of communist party in the 1930's, so were a lot of people. He was never anti-American, not even close according to still classified FBI files. His wife was more devoted, but gave no hint of being anti-American. He attended the meetings on occasion because she wanted him to go. (Any one been dragged by a spouse to a PTA meeting?) The truth is Teller was a competitor who felt he diden't got the credit for his contribution with the A-bomb. Teller was a prick, and his targeting of R.O. destroyed the man, he lost his clearance which was the kiss death having been labeled disloyal could not even a job teaching high school...
As for others who spout total b.s. on the Internet, and have no scientific basis or would know a scientific thought if it bit them in the ***, I would censor nothing. Just remind people to not believe everything they hear, or read on the Internet. Just do a little homework. You don't need a science background to look things up, although it can speed things up. I could not believe how incredibly gullible or just stupid people could be with the 9/11 conspiracy theories. People blamed the government, the Jews, the Aliens, please just pile into the little clown cars and give our children a laugh. Any VERY BASIC knowledge of engineering would dispel this crap. By the way I have knowledge of real conspiracy. To be effective you can not get bold face lies to work. You need at least 95% truth maybe 2% plausible but not true, the rest can be science fiction. But it should not be unbelievable sci-fi.

Thanks for a considered and entertaining reply Hawksecho
The above seems to imply that conspiracies are predicated by truth !
LOL, no you CAN fool ALL the people for a LONG time by using bold faced lies..... yes there must be 90% rumored scientific truth and the rest"plausible" LOL
as long as the deceived can SEE the problem.... as in say "polluted skies" or not see the problem as in that it is invisible... an invisible layer of petroleum oil on the surface of the seas
a very sad example, TODAY, Global Warming via greenhouse gasses or now by the more slippery term, "emissions". These atmospheric emissions are easily seen by all, so 100% BS works well and deceit once again is unchallenged...this deceit will bring about the extinction of LIFE (yes you too) on this rock you call Earth
.........in this case the problem is invisible...
another excellent example of scientific deceit was tobacco smoking's health effects, in this case the alleged adverse problems were not SEEN by the public, invisible to them all, so 100% lies worked well to say there were no adverse health effects... this deceit only brought about the demise of say 20-50% of the population... and hooked many onto LEGAL ADDICTIVE DRUGS....
lead in petrol was another example... this just turned people insane...
just luvly !!!!!!!!!!
Most examples of perpetuated deceit are busted by science revealing the invisible,..... by some who know what is actually happening...if it is unseen and invisible except to a scientist... if it can't be seen then it does not exist..would be layperson's logic!!!!!
Earthling's know no limits to deceit, and any internet censorship would just be another way to deny knowledge..criticism, solutions etc to the people (the few who may still think, who would cause revolution and bring about necessary changes)... unpleasant for the controllers, but a benefit for the people
I expect the sudden flooding of this forum has a lot to do with truth.... stop the leak
The establishment has soiled its pants, and nothing will save them
pathetic earthlings, your doom is certain now.
But once print is deemed to be so powerful that it can sway the projected propaganda of the establishment, then one may just appreciate what level the projected lies of the establishment are on....
THEY must be really running scared to be closing every critical arena of discussion.
George Orwell explored such scenarios of this modern world, via SciFi (LOL, science truth... using the power of science as a fortune teller) in his book "1984"
Earthlings, you can not change your history, you are doomed to repeat again and again.... your power for understanding yourself is almost nil... and you power to ignore the past is almost infinite.
Brave New World...Hope Above Truth
goodluck
There is a rumor that this Credit crunch is an act of warfare......
The West is under attack...which could result in warfare
The rumour has proved to be a fact.... money, the grease of society has dried up, and the other-side now has all the options.
