Recently an acquaintance of mine died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. It is impossible for me to accurately describe the absolute horror of his last few months so I will not try. Prions are a relatively new player on the scene and much about them is still open to debate. I have read that a researcher at Yale University feels that they are misclassified and that they are actually viral, but I don't remember where I read that and I am not allowed to post hyperlinks here anyway. My question is just geared at the general opinion concerning prion disorders. How big a deal are they? They are the only disorder that I know of that has(seemingly) a 100% mortality rate. I am just interested to hear opinions about them. I have also read that they may have an incubation period of 30-50 years, which increases the potential danger that they currently pose. I think that there was an outbreak of prion deaths associated with cannibalism sometime in the mid 20th century, but the kicker is that the outbreak did not occur until several decades after the cessation of cannibalism. Scary.
Also, I would recommend googling Fatal Familial Insomnia. I think it is probably the most terrible disease that I have read about.
