There are no bimetallic connections in a disposable shaver, so I imagine "losing it's edge" is more a case of the edge bending out of true than rusting or abrading away. With chef's knifes, they are more frequently bent back to true with a so-called "sharpening steel" than actually sharpened.
If that is case (and micro-photography of a typical "dull" razor is the easiest way to test this hypothesis that I can think of) then the case for leaving the cover on or off is less a function of the life of the blade and more a case of the hygienic nature of wet surfaces kept in a bathroom.
Like Chuck Norris, I scrape my beard off with fresh fractured obsidian and/or glass microtomes so this topic means less to me than other men.
When I was a Prisoner of War, I had one razor blade which I dried after use and put it inside of a glass and straightened the edge and so the blade lasted me for about one year. It was shaving just as well after about one year as it did when I first used it. Thanks for comments. Joe L. Ogan
u seem to agree with Ogan from Naked Scientist.com?

Shavers??

.... they're designed for sissy no-balls types- I personally use a blow-lamp (in re-heat mode) to remove my unwanted, undesired stubble jazz.

I always imagined the wisemen of this forum as having long white beards and hovering cross-legged in total mastery of gravitational force.
Now you're telling me they shave?

that's a good one. Too bad his chin is shaved instead of a long white beard. What about this one:
