Classmate"s producer is ASUS, from Taiwan.
But whether Quata or ASUS, their assembled factory are all in China.
Intel's attitude is appalling. Here's an attempt by Negroponte and the Media Lab to do something for impoverished kids in the Third World and Intel has to introduce crass commercialism into the mix. No wonder the rest of the world think the US will do nothing even vaguely charitable unless someone makes a buck.

Agreed. It is well-known OLPC first tapped Intel to manufacture for them, but Intel scoffed at the idea. Not enough margin for them? Then they started their own Classmate PC program, which is really designed to encourage buying more chips from Intel.
If these companies can offer these laptops for this price why are we in the states having to pay 5-10 times as much for a laptop??? Talk about corporate GREED!!!!
