I was at Pycon in Dallas earlier this year and Ivan Krstić gave a keynote on thw OPLC where he mentioned that the handcrank had been dropped after investigation discovered the case would not survive the beating it would get.. unless made out of titatnium.

Looking at the countries concerned, a solar powered laptop might be better, with an energy storage device which would keep the battery charged for several hours after sun down.
