Can any of the forum moderators tell me why there isn't a board for new comers to tell a bit about themselves...? I've noticed that a lot of new people come here rather shy, and i just think it would be good to have a board for them to introduce themselves first.

Gizmo and Empress. They are our ambassadors of PhysOrg.com.
But there will never be enough :)

Because nobody cares about that useless sh!t. We're here to butcher science, not welcome newcomers. tongue.gif

Ah hell. When I was a newbie I didn't bother telling anybody anything about me. I didn't care. I just started posting like I owned the place (and still do). wink.gif

Hi all, I am only an armature to the fields of science physics and technology etc, but I do have a passion for it and seek to learn more. One part of this board I am not to certain about even after reading all the rules and what other information about this board, do you have to be a professional researcher to qualify?

Well there isn't much to say about myself except that I has always had a passion for various fields of science. I am a retired social worker and a 62 year old grandmother, Actually what I have read in other posts in other forums I found of interest. But before I post anywhere I would like to know if this place is for professionals only? Or are amateurs welcome as well. If there isn't a restriction have another friend near my age that is also interested.

If I have blooped then I apologise and I will leave without having to be put in restraint with handcuffs and straight jacket.. biggrin.gif

Tinker
Empress Palpatine
Hi there and welcome. biggrin.gif

Anyone interested in science and physics can come here. No, not everybody here is a professional. I am not. There are all kinds of people here and a wide range of opinions. Yes, there are some people here who actually work in those fields or who are studying it in college. Others like me are just interested as a hobby. Dig in and enjoy. biggrin.gif
Tinker
Hi Empress Palpatine
Thank you I am looking forward to check the diferent topics on the board. If I can get a hold of my friend I will ask her to come and check it out as well.

I didn't realize there was a separate thread for introductions.

My name is Ben. I am a grad student at Ohio State. I work in particle phenomenology/string theory, and can answer most questions about strings theory (the particle physics side) and quantum field theory. I try to stay out of discussion about black holes because I am always wrong, but I am not always successful.

I like to fish and hunt and drink whiskey. I am the only redneck that you'll ever meet that can skin a deer and tell you why compactifying the heterotic string on a six torus gives N=4 supersymmetry.
Empress Palpatine
Hi there, Ben. biggrin.gif You have an interesting combination of interests, string theory and hunting. You must really surprise your fellow hunters 'round the campfire.

What's the ``forum mafia''?
N O M
forum mafia? It was an insult to a few members from uber-troll Terry Giblin, we wear it with pride.

Warning: Before you attempt to look up any of terry's past posts, remove any sharp or hard objects from around your chair.
BenTheMan
Yeah he spammed one of my threads with pictures of Feynman. ***.

Heh.

How does the moderation work around here? Are they helpful in keeping science based threads on track?
N O M
You could try using the report function, say the member is being constantly off topic.
It's a fairly safe bet that the mods think that Zephir could do with a smack in the head on the hand for his AWK nonsense.
BenTheMan
Yeah. I;ve been reporting him for spamming my string theory thread.
N O M
The moderation here is a tad inconsistent. It could even be described as fickle. Not that I'm complaining, it would drive most people insane.

Just look at it as a challenge. cool.gif
BenTheMan
Inconsistent or nonexistant?

They don't seem to care that there are people flaming my string theory thread, even though I explicitly asked them to help keep it clean in the original post, followed by repeated beggin in ``report post'' function.

Seems they have their thumbs in their asses to say the least.
N O M
Try sending a pm to member RealityCheck. Though he does have crank leanings, he has managed to get a thread "Special Project: 'Complete' Cosmology Theory From Scratch" where he is a moderator. He might be able to help you out.

Failing that, we could lend you one of these:

Hello, all!

I am a complete newbie here, too. I was moved to join by Tinker's post, and welcome to you, ma'am.

I can't help but point out that spellcheckers are funnier than _we_ are most of the time. I believe that you meant 'amateur' and your computer supplied 'armature', as in a generator. Next to 'field', yet.

How lovely! And quite on-topic, in a physical sense. biggrin.gif

Again, good to be here, and welcome.

I'm actually here looking to find what I hope is some semblence of truth. Yes, in a way I am in fact a "Truther", but when I say this I mean the actual truth because there are too many "stories" floating around that don't fit, too many people who aren't thinking outside the box, who refuse to give me a valid reason to believe what the biased media outlets regurgitate. I am not a scientist, and can not contribute much to the scientific/physics aspect of this, but I do know what I've seen in the footage that makes me think twice about taking anything at face value. Things that just don't add up.

2 years later it was used as one of the reasons for invading Iraq.

Now some guy is going around claiming it was an "inside job", and has some real strange ideas about other "***" like shadow governments. I know the government is very capable of quieting people and events when it wants to do so, and some of the legislation that has been passed seems too convenient (Patriot Act).

It all just seems too convenient. Granted, it could always be as simple as it looks, but I'm afraid that is exactly what someone (if that isn't the case) wants everyone to believe.

Critical thinking > taking anything at face value

Everything happens for a reason even if the reasons aren't known ATT.

Terry was the instigator of the title?

No, he wasn't. But he did a great job advertizing this title.

Being inspired with a book, I came up with this title and wrote “Member of Forum Mafia” in my signature.
Fivedoughnut saw my signature and gave me a positive feedback saying “A real goodfella” and posted a picture from the movie “Goodfellas”.
Terry Giblin was online at this exact moment, he saw this and started a thread, quoting fivedoughnut’s feedback and saying that we call each other “gangsters” or something similar.
In this thread he was whining about feedback abuse, evil nature of our conspiracy, tit-for-tat positive feedbacks within FM, etc. Then this thread got deleted by the moderator.
N O M had the impression that it was Giblin, who came up with this name because Giblin started this thread. But as I pointed out above, Giblin had nothing to do with the “FM” title, he just did a good job advertizing it. laugh.gif
