http://www.physorg.com/news73319932.html The U.S. Navy has a system that controls the throttles and the aircraft attitude while making arrested landing aboard Aircraft Carriers and this system has been in operation for over 30 years. The Navy used to have Aircraft in the 1950"s that used Glideslope transmitters to land in extremely low visibility, but was not utilized very much due to pilots not trusting the system.
Yes ... and military-grade GPS , which has an accuracy of +/- 1 or 2 cm (!!! yes) goes a long way towards helping those navy pilots, even on a wave-tossed deck at night!!!
of course , tankers are aloft and can refuel the jet to get out of any serious storm's way... Contrary to general belief, those pilots have no absolute need to do any carrier landing at all ... However, hormones being what they are, the pressure to hit the deck on the 1st or 2nd wire is tremendous ...
