Mexicans are being invited to exchange their weapons for computers under a quirky new idea to curb rampant crime in Mexico City.

Authorities in one of the city"s 16 districts are offering a new computer, out of 150 donated by a charitable foundation, for each gun handed in.

"People often have a gun at home, which could perhaps be for self-defense, but sadly it becomes a family tragedy when it is not used properly " Guadalupe Lopez, local government head for the central district of Alvaro Obregon, told Reuters.

Liberty
Gun confiscation (stealing) plain and simple. This is a United Nations world wide effort and agenda being implemented through governments around the world including the US to disarm you so you can't defend yourself. We should get rid of the United Nations.
g_maxi
liberty,

you silly plonker...... defend yourself from whom???? your neighbors!!!!! if you don't know whom it is that your fighting "axis of evil" or not - sorry i meant "defending yourself" - guns are going to be of little use, because you have to know where one is pointing them.. or silly Willies like oneself would end up hurt them selves.

Guns aren't just for killing people, you know. They're also for hunting.

Unfortunately like most developed nations the US has yet to figure out that it creates about half of violent crime and all drug crime by creating illegal markets for substances like marijuana and cocaine. We where obviously too stupid to learn from prohibition and all lulled sleep by waves of propaganda. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, if drugs where not illegal the hardcore addicts would be in the treatment/distribution centers and not stealing to feed their habit, because drugs would be cheap. That would cause the collapse of the drug trade in the US, Also eliminating lots of violent crime. History repeats, look up US prohibition. Then there would be less of a reason to own a gun. No worries of a crack head breaking into your house to steal to feed his addiction, But you would always have the real criminals to worry about. cool.gif

Those of you who are against owning guns for protection are so short-sighted. What happens when we are finally visited by some aliens that want to destroy us, as sci-fi authors and movies have prophesied time and again? I'll be armed and waiting, that's what!

Liberty, (and others)

I have never understood why people feel the need to keep guns in thier houses, I mean how stupid do you need to be to beleive that if every person has a gun they will be safe!!! Its almost laughable if it was not so fundamentaly wrong.

In my mind anyone who has a gun is tempting fate and deserves to be shot.

Im glad to be living in the UK where we are much more sensible.

It seems only natural that someone with the name "Liberty" would be pro guns!

So, for all you trigger happy fanatics out there...

You truly think that if an advanced, alien species INVADES earth, your little 9mm is going to be enough to stop them? Or your .50cal? Give me a break. That's the most pathetic justification I've ever heard.

As for protecting yourself in everyday life... I agree there might be some situations where you won't survive without a gun. Fortunately, we have governments to diminish the occurence of this. So, maybe if the officials weren't so busy worrying about what you're going to do with your gun, they could get back to hunting the real criminals, eh?

Up here in Canada, we don't worry much about guns. Being 18, and frequenting a fair amoung of clubs, I agree wioth Loadex. The illegality of drugs is the problem. I have been in 3 situations involving guns so far in my life. I, nor anyone I was with, have never been shot. Here's why:
1. Most petty criminals don't know a thing about guns. What I mean by this is they don't know how to use one. They approach way to close before pulling it out and threatening. (Avoid exposure?!
blink.gif )
2. I practiced Wing Chun Kung Fu for 4 years. Nothing intense, 3 classes a week, 2 hours a class. I now know how to defend against a gun.
3. Now that the idiot has stepped close to menace me/my friends with the gun, it's fairly easy to disarm him.

I kid you not, 3 seperate occasions, this has worked. I realize this may be unusual, as I am a bigger guy it might be easier to accomplish that a tiny asian lady... but I don't think the asian lady would have a gun either smile.gif

My point is this: If you have a good command of the english language, and can think reasonably well in a crisis situation, you can easily get the average thug close enough to you to enable a disarm.

--> Guns don't kill people, Pfhor do. (http://www.infinityltd.org/images/pfhor_hunter.gif)

That's great that you two guys can't take a joke, and a mark of your humanity, Xylem, (as well as either brazen ignorance or a poorly chosen attempt at irony, take your pick) that you believe anyone who owns a gun should be SHOT. As I said before, people use guns for more than just killing other people. I would go as far as to say the majority of gun-owners, at least in my neck of the country (being Texas), use theirs for hunting and marksmanship practice. Your assumption that people who own guns believe everyone should have one for safety, strikes me as rather childish and furthers a stereotype that has little basis in reality.

I was also joking about the alien invasion thing, just so you know, bmcghie. Although I would like to point out that you seem to have some sort of preconceived notions about the physiology, culture and industrial history of the hypothetical alien invaders, notions likely gained from watching the Sci-Fi channel or other B-rate movies.

But onto the issue of Canada and your anecodtal evidence opposing gun-ownership. Having been in three encounters with gun-toting petty criminals hardly gives you grounds to say "most" of them know nothing about how to work a gun. Anyone who isn't a hermit, that is, anyone who has ever watched a movie or television show that contained gun violence, knows how to work one. Guns, especially handguns, were designed to be used by even the simple-minded - you point the open end at what you want to hit, line your target up with the sight if you have to, and then pull the trigger.

It's great that you know some kind of kung fu, and sure it can disarm your gun-wielding opponent. What it can't do, however, is stop a bullet in mid-flight. UNLESS your assailant is stupid enough to get close to you (in which case it is very likely that they are unwilling or psychologically unable to attempt to kill you), your martial arts will not save your life. A hardened assailant will shoot you from a comfortable distance and move on, real life is not the movies.

But that rant aside, for anyone else who may have bored themselves reading this, my previous alien invasion statement was a complete joke, and the intent was more or less dry humor, a dig at the mentality of a great many rednecks.
All for Liberty
As far as I know, the Second Amendment has not yet been nixed. The right to keep and bear arms is an inalienable right, and those who favor disarmament should write their representatives to legislate an amendment. Of course, by definition an "inalienable" right is one that man has no power to void.

Going by history, an armed populace has always acted as a deterrent to both crime and tyranny. And the rise of a police state comes unexpectedly even amongst the most industrialized of nations where such a thing seemed unfathomable before it actually happened... example: Germany and the rapid rise of Nazism. America today is heading down the same road, though most here are in denial just as the Germans were until it was too late. A little research into what's going on helps...otherwise scoffing is a reflex of ignorance. Disarming has tended to precede subjugation of the people by those who abuse the power entrusted to them.

That is why the Second Amendment was written, to prevent what has happened so many times throughout history. Those who feel safe being disarmed, like some of you folks in the UK, are living in ignorant bliss. It is not mandatory that one become armed, but one should realize that cheering the removal of that right from other responsible individuals is treading on self-determination and threatens the security of a free state. Remember, vigilance is the eternal price of liberty.

I think it's good that computers are traded for weapons, as it's not outright disarming, but one could certainly argue that such a thing poses a slippery slope hazard toward those ends.

Hahaha no one wants to go to Canada ryuuguu. I personally wouldnt mind if it ceased to be.
JT from CANADA...
CLAYTON...I guess that's why an American College Study has found Canada to be the most desirable country IN THE WORLD to live in, with Most Livable Cities, Most Livable Neighborhoods...year after year, for about six years.

People like you SHOULD stay where they are at. You know nothing of the world around you. 'W' Bush mentioned that the biggest danger to the US was 'isolationism' You could be the Poster Boy! ph34r.gif

OK so my previous statement that all people who own guns should be shot, was a little hasty.. I understand that people use guns also for sport and that is fine, my issue is with those people that posess guns for protection, protection against what? why it must be from the other people who own guns for the same reason! HAHA. Idiotic springs to mind...
