Hey,

We have been given this assignment n I need some help in finding the answers-

Design an experiment to investigate how the magnetic field strength of a magnet depends on the temperature of the magnet in the range from 0-200C,particular attention shouuld be paid to the following-

a) The method of measuring the magnetic field strength(magnetic flux density),
cool.gif How the temp of the magnet would be measured in the given range,
c) The method of ensuring that the temp of the magnet is uniform,
d) The procedure to be followed,
e) The control of variables.

Here are a couple of suggestions to get you started:

Use a small rotating loop of wire to measure the magnetic field. Spinning the wire loop at a known rate , and knowing the area and number of wraps of wire around the look, you can predict the voltage generated. Measure it with an AC voltmeter or an oscilloscope. The measured voltage will give you enough information to calculate the strength of the magnetic field.

(Other methods, such as measuring the force the magnet exerts on a piece of iron, will not give you a good result, because the force is NOT proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. A stronger magnet makes the iron into a stronger magnet too, so the force more than doubles if you double the strength of the magnetic field of the original magnet.)

Thermocouples are a good way to measure temperature on a piece of metal. They convert temperature into a voltage signal, which you can also measure with your voltmeter (DC this time) or oscilloscope.

Put several thermocouples along the length of the magnet. If their temperatures are all the same, then the magnet's temperature is uniform. You will need to calibrate your thermocouples (find out what voltage they give for a given temperature) before you can use them. Otherwise, you can see the voltages, but you don't know what they mean. You will have to calibrate each thermocouple separately, since no two will give exactly the same voltage at the same temperature, due to random differences in their manufacture.

Procedure details and control of variables depend on how you set up your experiment and whether you choose to use these suggestions or do something else.

It's inappropriate to ask others to do your homework for you. I recommend taking an honest shot at it yourself and upon failing asking for help, but only after posting the work you've done so far. It's better for all concerned.

Hopefully she has finished her course on physics by now! Question was in 2006. But I agree it is better that they find the formulas and try it themselves.
