One glass of red wine can be good for you, but a second may not. The first drink relaxes the blood vessels and reduces the amount of work the heart has to do but the second countered any health benefits - increasing the risk of high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and heart failure. Many questions have been raised by this research and further study would be needed to try and provide some of the answers. At the current time, it seems sensible to follow standard recommendations for alcohol consumption.

Where I come from we have a saying - "a bird never flew on one wing"!!! I think if we could all stop fretting about what is good for us and what is bad and just chill out it would probably be more beneficial than anything else.

In the end it depends on the body, and we do not yet have things like tricorders. My grandfather smoked cigars all day every day for nearly 70 years, and had a martini at mid day and a manhattan or two in the evening - every day. He died at 96 of prostate cancer which he did not get until 93, never had anything serious prior.
Both of his sons, who didn't smoke, and drank very little, died of heart attacks, one at 39, one at 62.
One curious thing though. He had little ability to taste, and actually disliked eating. As a result he ate little, but apparently enough. The tone of his lifestyle was exactly Edward 3's comment.
