I have often wondered whether cellular automata are conscious in their simulated environments. If so, what they consider their "universe" is totally simulated with fairly simple rules.

Yet, the tables can be turned, and we may very well be in a simulated world ourselves. The strange events therein can then be easily attributed to the game player, "playing" our universe. Artificial reality is the real thing, maybe.

Makes me think of the M.I.B. II locker scene, or the tower of turtles, or elephants.
