I'd like to apologize for taking any of your time but ... well I'm rather worthless in math and science. I've been using Wikipedia to help with some problems and constantly referring back to my textbook (entitled Modern Physics) but there are still some things I can't find the answers to.
I was hoping I could post questions here and a few of the physics minded members would help to show me how to get the answer. Usually once I know how to do something I can remember it rather well, but these things I can't find the answer to.
So, I'll start out with
In the case of a convex mirror are f and d(subscript i) both possitive or negative, or is one possitive while the other is negative?
I'll continue searching for answers on my own, and upon finding them or with someone elses help I'll post another question I don't understand here.

I'm working on the index of refraction, and have found n=c/v as the formula... or I think it is, as well as a list of a few substances index.. So if I wanted to find the speed of light in the particular objects I would divide the speed in air by the index of the object?

Be aware that they are usually defined at yellow light (@600nm).
If you divide c by n(1.77 for sapphire) you get v for that medium.

I'm sorry I confused you with the wavelength reference.
c is the speed of light in a vaccum, measured in m/s. v (in any medium) is also measured in m/s, which your results should be in.
Light (or any electromagnetic wave) is also characterized by it's frequency and wavelength where (frequency = 1/wavelength).
The index of refraction is dependant on the frequency (or wavelength) of light that is being "slowed down". (This is why a prism refracts different colors at different angles.)
Point being that quoted indexes of refraction are typically calculated using 600nm wavelength, which is yellow light (the middle of the visible spectrum).

If you go to hyperphysics and navagate the index to: "Light and Vision", "lenses", Lens equations" it will give you a plug in the values problem solver.
Please check out the formulas yourself to know why you are getting the answers you get.
Mirror equations can be found in the same way, but again, look at the concepts tabs to fully understand these equations.
