My husband and I want to go on a spectuacular trip soon. We were looking for advice. Anyone have any fantastic locations? A means to save some cash would be awesome too. Vacationing is pricey these days.

I hate to be a buzzkill, but the best vacations I've ever had have been spent at home, taking naps whenever I want and having the energy to make those fixes needed around the house that I never have time for.

Further, I find that the hassle of travelling leaves me more tired when I get back than I was when I left, regardless of how much fun I had wherever I went.

One final point, the stress of vacationing, especially when it's a tight schedule (like trying to see all of Europe in two weeks), ends up breaking-up a lot of relationships. I've seen it happen almost routinely. My advice would be that if there are relationship issues that you're hoping a vacation will fix, it will backfire.

All that said, if you're still anxious to go someplace nice, the nicest vacation I ever had was going to Bermuda. The people are friendly, the streets are clean, the views and flowers spectacular, and the temperatures are moderate. (The best way to get around the island is on rented mopeds, but be careful, I almost got killed when I had to simultaneously pass a bicyclist who was passing a couple walking on the side of the road and a tour bus had to pass a pedestrian on the other side of the road, with the bus heading my way, closure speed about 80mph. We all came within inches of each other in one split-second.)

But that's just my opinion. I have a friend who's planning a hike across Nepal (or Tibet?) that's scheduled to take five weeks. He's also hiked (or bicycled?) from Mexico to Canada.

Another place that I enjoyed going was England and Scotland, with a weekend stopover in Paris. Scotland's beautiful and the people are very friendly, honest, and gracious. London was spectacular as a city, and there was no shortage of good places to eat, regardless of their reputation for not having good cuisine. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding is not to be underestimated, they know what they're doing. (Avoid hamburgers, though. They don't quite understand the concept.) Paris has plenty of sites worth seeing, but I'd recommend making an attempt at learning a bit of the language, first, as Parisians can be notoriously rude, especially so to people who try to substitute *yelled English* for French. (Put yourself in their place, visualize someone from another country yelling jibberish in your face thinking that's going to make it easier for you to understand.)

Also, Canada's nice, especially considering it's hot as h*ll everyplace south of there (until you get to Antarctica).

I have another friend who visits China frequently, but he's friends with one of the richest women in China, and so he's got a good reason to go.

What country do you live in? Do you have children and, if so, will they be travelling with you?

Don't know where you are or what you consider expensive, but I'll second Scotland. The country is gorgeous and the people are friendly.

I also cannot get enough of London. The history that's packed into that one location is fascinating. The English countryside is also beautiful.

My next trip later this year is to Costa Rica. I'll let you know how that goes.

If you're int the US, I highly recommend Mesa Verde in the four corners region.

I took a vacation from this forum and that was highly pleasing!
If I could go on vacation now, I might go to Amish country and see how those carriages work and if you have to be amish to use them on a daily basis.

Hawaii is a great place but not inexpensive. I suggest some place with nature trails, hot springs, cool rivers, shade trees and soft grasses!

Southeast Asia should still be cheap. Nice beaches in Thailand and Angkor Watt in Cambodia is fantastic.

Jordon isn't as cheap but full of places to see. If just for Petra it's worth going to.

Hmmm..... huh.gif Really? I didn't know that the crusaders had a lovely time being slaughtered and slaughtering there.

I'm talking about here and now. The crusades add to the rich history that the area has to offer.

I first visited Mesa Verde when I was 12. To learn that a civilization had thrived in the region for over a thousand years and then had vanished hundreds of years before Columbus set foot in America was a very moving experience. It was the first time this little boy realized that humans have been struggling with the same problems that we still struggle with since we first stood up right. Food, shelter and raising a family. I returned 35 years later and the magic is still there.

While you're in the area, the Durango-Silverton narrow guage railroad is a wonderful trip. The scenery is fantastic.

Alaska. If you are the civilized touring kind, then Princess Tours does a great job of cruises and hotels.

If you are the backpacking kind, a motorcycle trip from the US to Alaska, via the Inside Passage on a state ferry is phenomenal. We took 6 weeks, went from Anchorage Alaska to San Diego (moving down from AK to CA) on my motorcycle.

Wife and I had an absolute fantastic time. Adventure, wildlife, and the most spectacular scenery you will ever see (if you are into mountains and forests) some people prefer the beach scene.

If that is the case, Poipu in Kauai is fantastic as well. You can take it easy, or go scuba, zip lining, hiking, boogie boarding, surfing, sailing, or just lay on the beach. Very laid back, not touristy at all.

With the dollar at all time lows, going overseas can be super expensive right now...

Weren't you just crying about the Alaskan natives? You must not have too much trouble with their situation if you went to Alaska and doubtlessly exposed them to your heresy.

New Zealands worth a try. Ski season's just started. Good walking trails for the frail and the fit.

I've also heard that Belize is a great place for a vacation. It was formerly a British colony, so more people there speak English, and I was told that everyone was very friendly. (I'd wait for the weather to cool down though, as it's still hotter than most places in the US.)

Another place you can't go wrong vacationing at is San Francisco. You can't find more picturesque scenery, and it's much cooler than LA (where I live), and there are no bad restaurants and plenty to see.

NO WCELLIOTT!!!! Rain occurs every other day in Belize and the place is LOADED WITH GANG BANGERS!!! Stay well away, because living in Walmart's parking lots is considered a decent spot to place a trailer. blink.gif ph34r.gif I am not joking. unsure.gif

I guess I should've prefaced my Belize suggestion with the fact that the source was a guy who went there on vacation some 20 years ago. Times change, places change.

I still would recommend San Francisco, though.

Yeah, since muslims are much more friendly and less smug in their religion than christians, any islamic country is worth visiting - even those under illegal occupation.
