I agree, you cold use those for smelling out old minefields, left overs from wars f ex.
It's one of the biggest problems, those minefields. It's so f**g cheap to buy them and once you buried them they continue to work, for decades depending on conditions. look at Africa and Serbia, Croatia.

Shoot, all they need to do is get dogs trained to sniff out the particular disease they want to find.

There's are a limited supply of trained dogs, otherwise you're perfectly right.

This technique does not seem proactive enough, in that prepared antibodies need to be attached first to the wires. If the disease mutates, it cannot be caught in time.
