Online search leader Google is preparing to launch a wireless internet service, Google WiFi, according to several pages found on the company's website on Tuesday.

A WiFi service, which offers a high-speed connection to the internet, would take Google even further from its search roots and move it into the fiercely competitive world of internet access providers and telecommunications companies.

Google = 21st Century Microsoft.

I can see the headline now: "Google launches Google OS"

Google OS….Fully indexing your system for your protection.

“Now you can find the files you need and want….even if the files are on someone else’s hard drive”.

For the 50millionth time google is not launching a WIFI service!!! They are no more becoming an ISP in the sense that they provide you with a free internet connection than some other proxy such as the The Anonymizer.

Google is providing a VPN service so that wireless users on insecure networks can have their data encrypted before sending it over wireless channels!!!! After which time Google will take that data and use it to augment their AdSense and other online advertising business. There is no such thing as a free lunch!!

UGGGH!!!! This was simply a good marketing technique because most people while they know what WIFI is they don't know what VPN is. Calling it Google VPN would have only attracted the most tech oriented people out there. mad.gif mad.gif

Right now Google is acting as both a VPN client provider and an ISP while testing the VPN client. The confusion is understandable.

QUOTE
The client software was designed to connect to the Google Wi-Fi network, which consists of a few hot spots in San Francisco created in partnership with Feeva, a startup that's in the business of providing free, ad-supported wireless services.

Will they be so when they fully implement the VPN client? Most likely not. Even if they are, it will be limited to the sponsored are they have now.

I don't know If I'm the only one who thinks this but doesn't it seem like google is slowly introducing an O/S in increments. All free feature downloads that everyone eats up all they have to do is roll out a bundle to download and tie all features into one fully functional O/S................

Just a little conspiracy theory.
