They are called echizen kurage and they sound like monsters from the trashier reaches of Japanese science fiction.

They are 6ft wide and weigh 450lb (200kg), with countless poisonous tentacles, they have drifted across the void to terrorise the people of Japan. Vast armadas of the slimy horrors have cut off the country"s food supply. As soon as one is killed more appear to take its place.

Finally, the quarrelsome governments of the region are banding together to unite against the enemy.

"kurage" means "jellyfish" in Japanese, so it's more proper to say Echizen
jellyfish. But besides that, is "eutrophication of the ocean" be possible?

The most important thing to note is that jellyfishes and other soft-bodied
marine creatures increase in number when the water is not sufficiently
oxygenated to support fish life. (In oxygenated water, these low-oxygen
tolerant jellyfish also get eatten while they're still small by oxygen loving
creatures.)

The increasing load of carbonic acid causing acidification of the water also
contributes to harsher environment that encourages these soft bodied creatures
that are not valuable as human food.

Since the global warming is a foregone conclusion (Bad America, bad, bad.)
about the only option we have left is to learn to eat these kurage, poison or
not. How about kurage a la mode? Or kurage meat spaghetti? Kurage ramen?

well i suppose they would be giant compared to the average japanese size.
Confused2
It would be interesting to know how long they take to get to that size (the jellyfish not the Japanese) - years?

What makes you think America is to blame? This happens to be a world full of countries all loading this planet with garbage, and if you are to chicken to take responsibility for your actions you don't deserve that computer you are using.

Suppose it breaks down. You then throw it away, it pollutes the soil AND the water. Your country IS industrialized, isn't it? Or are you saying you are in a place without computers. Maybe you cross the boarder to type in your little comment and post it online. Maybe some dude in Australia flies in and out of the U.S. every time he posts online--that's a lot of miles!

And it’s a well-known fact that America has about five(4.9) percent of the worlds population but produces twenty-five(25) percent on the worlds carbon dioxide. A nice healthy balance???? Git!!!

if we ease the sarcasm and needless interpersonal exchange of profanity, I think we would be left to include that America does produce a huge amount of unnecessary pollutants and it is the principal source of global warming and sadly it refuses to recognize that. We also however are compelled to recognize that China is the second principal producer of pollution worldwide, along with Russia and EU. So although America's profile in pollution control is not perfect, neither is that of China, or south east asia, or Middleast and even Europe. Change and improvement is a must, and those nations who are now undertaking these changes, would in long term help ameliorate the situation while those who turn their back onto the issue, would eventually, and ironically suffer the most from its adverse effects.
Pollution Solution
China's pollution output is only high because of their sheer population density. Computed per capita (per head) it's nowhere near close to the US output of crap. Let's just get that straight. But then... given a chance, most people of the world (being all humans) are polluters at heart. They want their microwavable meals in styrofoam containers. In Korea they even have microwavable rice.

The fall in the quality of the posters in this website is something to be worried of. I don't know if all these posts come from teenagers with too much free time who are not interested in scientific discussion or from people who their extremism in other things (politics, religion) is higher than their interest in science (if they have any at all).
All kinds of fundamentalism (including chauvinism like in the case of this poster "Joshua555") are a bad start for scientific discussion. But fundamentalists don't tolerate the existence of people who don't think like them. Will we ever have to see this kind of posts in scientific discussion? Is this a scientific site or a science vs religion or science vs politics site?
I agree with one thing with you Joshua, we should all take a look at us on the mirror... And that includes you.

Drude, this is a misleading statement. America does indeed produce the most pollutants (I wouldn't call them unnecessary unless you have a cost-effective way of immediately replacing all industry with clean/green industry). However, America IS NOT the principal source of global warming. Manmade pollutant-related global warming, sure, but there is much scientific data being put out there right now theorizing that the earth goes through cycles of global warming and cooling, and it just so happens we are due a warm period. The fact is, we breathe oxygen and release carbon dioxide AS A BYPRODUCT OF OUR EXISTENCE. Combined with our widespread deforestation for building homes and furniture, and mass burning of organic materials, we as a species have done more in our few hundred thousand years of existence to damage the environment than could ever be attributed to modern pollution alone.

To conclude, America is not the principal source of global warming - nature is. We, along with the rest of the industrialized world, are merely helping to speed natural process along.

Also... what the hell?

I could have SWORN I clicked a link for an article on giant jellyfish. Which, imo, would make for a great movie. Oops, Hollywood probably already beat me to that one!

Jellyfish are creepy things, though. Anyone remember the scene from The Sphere where Queen Latifah gets stung to death through her deep sea suit by hundreds of them? It still creeps me out to think about it. I love that movie.

In this context though, I am a little worried. What happens to the marine life where they're currently invading, after they've been there for a period of time? How will the respective governments of the Orient deal with them, and how will their methods affect the already fragile ecosystem there?

Two typical knucklehead comments. If we start counting the total number of chemical accidents the good old USA would still win. pollution in this country was much much worse before we got to where we are now. You name it, the US has done it bigger and badder than anybody else. Anything from corruption to pollution, and the resulting pollution from corruption.

As for the microwave... the stupidity of that reply is astounding.... stunning really LOL! I was referring to the garbage output in the form of styrofoam and other disposables. I was not comparing heating elements. Trade in your defective brains people!!!

That is true. I meant to say among nations producing it. But as you said most causes of global warming are attributed to natural phenomena. I believe there is even a distuibe as whether or not this is in fact, a true fact. Based on data collection is seems that both sides hypothesis holds validity to some extend.
Pax
There should be nothing particularly controversial about the claim that the U.S. remains the primary (though not exclusive) party responsible for global warming. The numbers bear it out.

Most people who object to this type of claim generally tend to be over-defensive (and certainly overnationalistic) individuals who do not seem to be able to distinguish between national identity and personal pride.

In fact, the overabundance of what American euphemistically call "patriotism" in this country is a serious issue which is rarely addressed in the public forum. Overemotional (and often anti-intellectual) expressions of national "pride" need to be confronted at each and every juncture. The history of the world, especially in these times, can no longer afford the luxury of these old-style forms of collective pride. A keen analytical sense -- and a genuinely objective/scientific mindset -- will be of infinitely greater value to our kind.

Well, as you can see, I was replying to a post which implied that America is the sole producer of pollution when it's only 25%. I was pointing out that America is not the sole producer of pollution, and that everyone has an impact. You didn't have to be so harsh. I never said anything to imply that America has no part in the production of pollution, though you implied that I implied that.

I believe the U.S. must clean up its act, and the amount of pollution America produces is shamefull. However, the perpose of my post was that America is not the only producer of pollution, and it isn't, like so many of you pointed out while rediculing me.

I would like to also address South America and Africa. I think you do know America has little to do with the distruction of rainforests. And that affects the CO² level quite a bit.

Jellyfish has turned into pollution... well, ok.
The US does put out a lot of co2. It just stands to reason, as we produce a lot of power, and if you are not making it from solar or perhaps wave energy, co2 is going to be a byproduct. But not the only byproduct. Since shortly after the publication of "Silent Spring", we have been working on reducing our pollution. Scrubbers on smokestacks to eliminate the mercury, lead, sulfur and other emissions. Cars that emit less than a hundredth the pollution they did 40 years ago. Cities that put water back into rivers nearly as clean as what they took out. Then go look at China, or any number of other countries. Look at what is in their rivers - I've seen the raw sewage. Look at their air - China loses 10-15% of the sunlight to pollution in their air. Smog alerts used to be common in Los Angeles, but now they are extremely rare. Check out Beijing, Bangkok, New Delhi, Cairo, on and on...
Look at more than one pollutant. The US ain't perfect, and there are other countries that have caught up with our efforts (GREAT!!!), but we are still working on it (current President excluded) and will continue to. Produce energy without producing co2... we're working on it.

First let’s get the record strait. 51% of American voters voted for Bush. That leaves 49% of us that didn't. America was a place people went to escape religious persecution, therefore we have a LOT of religious fanatics, ~99.99% of which support Bush.

Yes we need to clean up our act, but instead of throwing the blame around look at the future. This is a world problem. The entire developing world is entering into an industrial revolution caused by globalization. Are the industrialized nations going to restrict developing nation’s abilities to make the same mistakes that we did? That wouldn't go over well. The world is changing quickly. I suspect that jellyfish and anecdotal evidence of global warming will do nothing to get the world's attention. Major catastrophes are required to justify the major costs of reducing pollution.

Remember, we're not talking about the end of human civilization here. It will just be a really bad day... for a long time. But once the effects start really impacting day to day life we will see a more effective strategy to combat it.

Just think! Maybe one day global warming will kill more people that terrorists, maybe then we can redirect our resources in a more appropriate manner. A manner that doesn’t kill as many Iraqi children.

Actually I think you need to understand what a religious fanatic is.. it's easy to find in todays world.. Wahabism, it was started as a Sunni fundamentalist Islamic movement, but has spread world wide.. there is a large difference in someone who lives a life based in faith, and one who is a fanatic.. one will take your insults, allow you to say as you please, and the other will hold you down in the street with one foot on your head while he takes a knife and decapitates you. I dont know about you.. but I do see a rather large difference between them.

You do yourself, and those around you a complete disservice when you use phrases like fanatics.. at the very least minimizes the ones who truly are fanatics, and defames those who are not..

Where can I find that 99.99% support Bush fact at? as I have never seen that.. and would like to look into.. so, can I ask, is that a factual number that I can reference someplace.. or is that your political slant speaking for you?

I am former military, I go to Church, I dont support Bush, I also know more than a few current military, and vets who dont support him, nor do they support Kerry, am I a fanatic? are my sons fanatics? my former Marines who went to church? the people who live around me? you do a great disservice to a great many people when you say things like that, most people deserve far better than that, it comes down to respect for people other than yourself.

When we as a nation care more about WHO is right, over WHAT is right.. we deserve everything we do and DON'T get..
