I too have become a hermit of sorts. I noticed somewhere along the line, that less people can bother you at home, if they don't have any clue where you live.
Also that I am a crotchety person trying to get out of my "oh so nice" and "friendly as all get out" pre-packaging. I am learning to get out of my box. That does not mean I am better...just more genuine I hope.
Being a loner is not a bad thing, so long as you keep yourself stimulated and don't let your brain stymie.
I suppose you had surgery...was it cataracts ? My mom has been diagnosed with one now, no more night driving (she could not drive good during daylight anyhow) until she gets surgery.
Sorry to hear about your mom's night vision problem. I recently saw something about cataract correction (lens replacement?) now involve minuscule-incision (ONE millimeter!) operating techniques using 'folded up' flexible lens material that 'unfolds' once inserted through the tiny incision. Hardly invasive at all, apparently....and hardly any 'recovery period' involved, either! Good news for your mom if so (I hope so!). Good luck to tikay's Mom!
My vision setback was an allergic inflammatory reaction in my nervous system....especially in my optic nerves. Ouch! Better now....lots! hehehe.
I have to be 'secluded' to avoid a myriad of 'allergy triggers' ranging from food, city life (smog/chemicals etc), food/virus protein allergens etc etc etc. Sort of allergic to the 21st century, really! hehehe.
But don't lose touch with family and friends (ain't internet/telecommunications great!). And my continuing sci-tech projects in a couple of BIG areas/problems keeps me occupied both in body and mind. So no dearth of 'stimulation for ME. And of course, there's the TOE special project sub-forum to take up any of my time/effort I can spare from my other non-cyberspace work, heh!
And I've always been a 'softie'....perhaps my chronic illness since childhood, and my practically life-long involvement in 'problem solving' for family, friends and employers in diverse areas has something to do with my highly 'tuned' 'empathy' and 'sympathy' memes/attitudes, hehehe.
You and many others here seem to have also have a more highly evolved empathy/sympathy meme/attitude. Good to see I'm not 'alone' in THAT, hehehe!
Cheers tikay, all!

Oh My goodness! A "Softie"
....In my childhood I would cry for hours at the slightest provocation.
My tenth year was a river of tears.
Plagued by depression for most of my life...the neuro-transmitters are connecting thanks to the new drugs for binding the un-bound. Some would say I am still a softie but...mostly I have been abused so much I can just relate to how that feeeeels.
Honestly i don't care what people think of me now, years of therapy and psych doctor friends...have helped me gain strength.
Shoot, I told everyone when I lost my mind at the beginning of this year. It came right back, good as ever!
I would add to your TOE thread if i were smarter dear! Maybe I will go see what is going on there, last I looked in i felt quite inadequate!

The TOE is 'quiet' at the moment. But it should soon liven up again when my eyes let me do some serious work for inputing to the stage-II Q & A TOE thread.
And as long as one can string two kind words together and say them to another.....and MEAN what they say, then NO-ONE is 'inadequate' in my book.
All else is learning opportunity/experience. Nothing more.
Maintain a balanced nutrition, exercise and realistic expectations of others, and you're bound to get ahead in the 'depression' game, tikay!
Cheers!
