While the coupling of mass spectrometry and imaging technology really is fantastic, readers should be aware that this technique cannot be used to perform real time in-vivo analysis, as is done for example with MRI or PET imaging.
The samples to be imaged and quantified need to be removed from the subject and carefully prepared, before being analyzed in an often lengthy process. Also, in the process of being analyzed the sample itself is destroyed.
