Hi guys. I'm subscribed to a satellite pay TV. There are free to air channels (FTAC) in my country. Once your subscription expires you get to watch the free to air channels, or rather used to. That changed some months ago as nowadays you get almost no channels at all. I feel this is exploitation and I want to get round this latest attack on my freedom. I need the FTAC for free.
How do I go about it?
I've started disconnecting the digibox (set top box) from the cable wired to the dish at 0830 hrs to 2030hrs (office time of the dstv provider) so that I may prevent the deactivation signal from reaching the digibox. Problem is I'll never know if they've become less greedy and allowed us back our FTAC. I don't want to risk hence failing to switch on the teli during the day.
So far do you think I'll succeed with this plugging unplugging business?
How best to avoid this exploitation?
Thanks in advance for your help guys.
NB. I wish Luty had covered this too in addition to helping us arm ourselves. I've armed myself.

I'll assume it is illegal to give such kind of info. You'll be an accomplice in crime or worse, right? I'll continue with my experiment but am contemplating removing the smartcard instead. It is quite a hassle unscrewing and screwing back the cable.

Are these "free to air" channels actually broadcasted over the air? If they are, you just need an antenna to pick them up.

Yeah, the FTA channels are broadcasted over the air. The antenna works but the picture quality is extremly poor, save for one station that approaches satellite TV's quality images.
If all fails, i'll eat humble pie and buy an aerial or pay up the USD10 monthly subscription.

Yeah, the USA switched over to all-digital TV broadcast a few years ago.

Sounds like you need to do some research into dreambox in my country can be used to view all the ftac's without a card inserted. You can even setup multiple dishes with a splitting system to point to different sats that fall in your country/area and view ftac's available on multiple sats. You can also use a motorised dish instead of multiple dishes.

Those dreambox's offer a lot more functionality than just accessing ftac's, if connected to the net and setup correctly to access to the right servers for... huh.gif

You need to do some web searching for what satellite footprints fall on your region of the map and look into what bouquets are available on those sats and the ftac's that fall under the bouquets. Then get a dish pointing to the sats you want to access.

Do research to be sure the dreambox will work in your country before buying it!

Isn't the signal scrambled? How does Dreambox decode that?

You have to check whats available in your region.

I did a quick search to answer Rb1 Q for Link USA NY.

You also get Free to view channels, i think those are encrypted and need the provides box to view. I'm no specialist on this, check for info on your region as to whats available and what channels are encrypted or not.

Wiki FTA
Wiki FTV

PS. Make sure the receiver box you want to purchase can receive on the bands you want to use and i think the LNB on the dish also needs to be compatible with the bands.

Thanks alot FBM, Robbitybob and EMPulse. This dreambox seems to be a good idea (and actually cheaper than the current provider's). I'll ask around if it will work in my country (Kenya).
My current seems to be working (I know for sure). I've lost all the subscribed channels but still accessing the FTA. All I do is to remove the smartcard during the provider's working hours. As long as this happens I won't subscribe again.
I'm seriously looking into purchasing this dreambox.

Party is over. All channels except one have been deactivated. I'm shopping for this Dreambox!
