This would be the most phenomenal turnabout in the history of desktop computing. There's just one fly in the ointment.

The idea that Apple would ditch its own OS for Microsoft Windows came to me from Yakov Epstein, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University, who wrote to me convinced that the process had already begun.

This is, quite simply put, the most idiotic idea Dvorak has come up with yet ... and Dvorak has come up with some pretty dumb ideas (that have been proven *laughably* untrue).

One word: FUD.

...Or, another point of view is that it makes sense and it's completely plausible. I like to think it's true just for sheer entertainment value laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Dvorak and Epstein are either idiots... or jokers. Apple is already in Windows territory by switching to Intel processors. They don't need to actually switch OS. That would be too obvious. If your computer already runs on the same procesor as Windows, it only take a very small nudge to get Windows users to try your OS and other applications or switch completely over.
KMC
Please no more Windows!! Now we will have to deal with viruses and hackers on the Windows-Mac machine.. How about porting the Apple OS to any brand name Intel pc. The hardware vendors will jump on the driver configurations. I have never called Microsoft because a hardware device did not work, I called the hardware vendor. I think Apple OS on any PC is what the people want or did Steve Jobs forget to ask his future customers?
bmcghie
That is EXACTLY what most mac users want. OS X on other platforms = More customizability.

Unfortunately blink.gif , Apple seems to be one step ahead. Would be hackers of Mac OS X found this poem warning them away.

So I don't think Apple wants their OS on other systems. However, they might be more inclined to allows Windows to run on the new chips. (Wouldn't hurt G5 sales tongue.gif )

You're as loony as Dvorak and Epstein. What on earth are you talking about? You're talking about people who would STEAL OSX... that has nothing to do with people BUYING the OSX for their Intel based computer. Steve is not stupid, I'm sure he's already contemplating preying upon Bill's captive audience... and it's about time. It's a brilliant strategy. There was no way he was ever going to be a viable conqueror of Bill's Dark Empire by using his own processor and operating system. Using his own OS with a common hardware that WinBots use opens up a whole new world to conquer... and a lot of people willing to be conquered.

People are working on it right now with the dual core macs. Im waiting for someone to crack it into a easy installable bitorrent download. Dont care about osx I like Apples product design and their laptops will be on everyones wish lists.
Karparian
well there you go... you can either sell them the OS or... sell them the machine and let them install Windows if they want (like you)
kwikit
What are you talking about... if Steve was smart, he'd notice that Microsoft is a hell of a lot better off financially than Intel. If Steve wanted to make some serious cash, he's stop trying to sell ridiculous hardware and sell the OS as a separate product that can be installed on any PC. However, I must add, I do like Apple's designs quite a lot, especially for the PC's they made / make, but if getting the experience onto everyone's system is important to him, if getting people to convert is his aim, them stop the hardware failure and focus on porting the OS completely to any and all Intel / AMD / IBM PC's. He'd have a hell of a lot more market share that way than he ever will selling hardware bundled.

Exactly!... so you agree with me. That is the ultimate aim. The game is just starting... so you guys take it easy. He's not competing with Intel, he's competing with Darth Bill. It's time to line up those neurons people!

I wish *I* could get paid to just sit around and make up stories with headlines designed only to pull in the most hits. Just think, I could call myself a journalist, but never actually research anything. I could make incredibly non-sensical statements and still pull in my 6 figure salary from lame faux-news outlets like FOX and ZDnet because my pay is based on how popular I am, not how often I am right. I stopped reading any of this guy's tripe about 10 years ago.

Dvorak and Epstein obviously have NO CLUE WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.

Wouldn´t be a bad move for apple, what they really sell are computers. Using windows is just a way of making macs more appealing to the pc using masses.

And what for? The average PC user WONT switch to mac os, we´re talking about nearly brainless apes here. However they BUY new hardware, so yea using windows makes a lot of sense.

See? Macs are already appealing, but they just dont have the proper OS to convince PC users to get one.

why does it have to be one or the other... when it could be both. Of course buying a Mac hardware would be much more appealing if you could run dual operating systems on it. I'm sure Apple has this in mind. It doesn't mean they have to/ or will switch to Windows. I rather highly doubt it. Think about it, if you could sell a machine that people can use for either OS, why would you have to switch? I don't think even Bill Gates wants that to happen. Steve certainly wouldn't.

You apple flowers need a few clues. The contest was lost IN THE 1980's!!!! Apple blew a good thing by being greedy about locking customers into proprietary hardware. No tears for them here.

Not correct, More platforms means more instability and stability is more important to me then being able to customize it to no end! The Mac is more then flexible enough for 95% of the computing population.
The reason IMHO that a Mac is a better PC is that the OS and hardware are developed as a single unit. Some call this a monopoly, I call it good business as it creates an appliance that is much easier to program for and maintain, which means stability. The same programmers that do the OS have intimate knowledge of the hardware design and know what to expect. This is not the case with Wintel PC's. MS has to develop the OS to accept the absolute largest set of hardware, while this is great for flexibility, the cost is great, in that it will never be as stable a platform across all hardware/vendor possibilities.

Windows is itself a hazard as the resent shake up in the windows section of MS has shown. They have been working on Vista for more then five bloody years and look at the problems they are stilll having. My God what are they doing in there?. Apple on the other hand, has been updating OS-X all along, and has most all the functionality that's in Vista, yet Apple has not had the difficulty implementing and releasing these features. Why? because windows is too complicated, everything is in one giant clump the OS the UI... MS even admitted this, thats one of their main augments to not releasing a version of windows sans the media player, because it intertwined into everything else! This is just crappy programming. The ironic thing is that Apple considers itself a hardware company and MS is a software complany and Apple is a better software company then MS (IMO).

Wintels will never be as stable as a Mac until the OS and hardware are treated as a single unit!

Well, I imagine the OS X programmers are hard at work to create an intel native OS for the next generation. As you say, vista seems to have SEVERAL gears in the spokes... And I love how the main "upgrades" they are implementing are already functioning very well in OS X.

And yes, what a computer needs to be is a fusion of hardware and software. I'm not sure I like the cobbled together idea. Unless it were to be implemented much more efficiently.
