Prostate cancer is an issue because it's preventable (to some extent), detectable, and treatable.
Men go to the doctor. Look around any physician's waiting room.
Women live longer than men for many reasons.
Sex hormones make a big difference. Male testosterone increases cholesterol and raises risk for heart disease. Female estrogen, however, decreases cholesterol and decreases risk of heart disease.
Hemoglobin and hematocrit (blood iron) make a difference. Men have more iron in their blood, and this makes them more liable for heart attacks and strokes. Men who donate blood may actually be at lower risk for cardiovascular disease.
Why women statistically live longer than men has been the topic of many studies. You'll find as many opinons as you find studies if you search.
Prostate cancer is a personal issue for me because my father died from it at age 53.
