Forget hair straighteners, curlers and expensive blow-dries. Throw out the styling mousse and hair gel.

For every straight-haired woman who has wanted curly hair and vice versa, the future is looking decidedly free of hair-altering implements and ointments.

For the first time, the structural difference between straight, wavy and curly hair has been revealed by scientists in Paris. They believe it could mark the first step towards drugs, or even shampoos, that can control hair shape: a revolution in the world of women"s hair.

After going through most of my life with the straightest hair possible, (I am 74 years of age) and always (since age 10) had perms, I have found in the past couple years since straight hair seems to be in vogue and I've stopped having perms, that suddenly the back of my head hair has some natural curl to it. I only wish the front would delelop some as well.

What about the side effects?

You are my mother's age and hanging out here?

My hair is kinky, and matted and there are things in it like twigs and cats.

This insane trend of poisoning whole organisms to produce a very local effect is getting out of hand. Making roses wholly toxic to ward off a few harmless bugs. Poisoning your liver to treat nail fungus... now taking a pill and risking unknown side effects to curl your hair??... this is the height of stupidity. Going out and getting a perm is so much better for your physical and mental health. It is so pleasurable to have somebody work on your hair. How about using the curling iron now and again?

I heard this works by altering the shape of the sites which the hair grows from. One wonders if this is limited to the top of one's head. One could end up looking kinda silly with kinky eyelashes and curly eyebrows. Besides that there's always the usual side effects list: dizziness, headache, brainhemorage, unexplained gender change... what have you. anyway i have a hunch this ones gonna turn out to be a bad idea.

I don't think I would take a pill just yet . but maybe ten years from now when we can determine the side effects. I would however try a shampoo - who knows what they are putting in shampoos anyway. wink.gif

I say " THANK GOODNESS". Where can I sign up for clinical trails.
Dont get me wrong, I am proud of my african hertiage, but the relaxing
every month, the chemical burns, the hours of sitting in beauty salons,
the money, money, money spent on product just to keep this hair under control.
Hey the side effects just may be worth the risk. dry.gif

Maybe she is your mother....

To be honest, I think my sister would really enjoy a shampoo that would alter her hair. But before I get it for her for Chrismas I want to make sure it won't kill her. unsure.gif

The only people who like curls are the ones who don't have them.

I have an autoimmune disorder that attacks my nails and hair, making my scalp sore; sleeping is a nightmare and combing my hair is a trial. It has severely damaged my hair's texture, which is frizzy and tightly curled to begin with. I can't use relaxers, hot combs or perms, so a pill that could give me manageable hair would be a god send.

I wouldn't want straight hair, just looser curls. L'Oreal is also working on reversing gray and regrowing hair. Compared to the harsh chemicals and dyes available now that are already cancerous and toxic, a pill for hair would be amazing.

But coffee, coconut, walnut oil and pineapple also have relaxing properties; I hope L'Oreal and other researchers will get into the business of transforming hair using natural methods, not chemicals and hormones.
