US scientist to announce designer genome breakthrough: report

And with the subtitle:

Celebrity US scientist Craig Venter has built a synthetic chromosome using chemicals made in a laboratory, the Guardian newspaper reported Saturday.

“The breakthrough, which Venter hopes could help develop new energy sources to combat global warming, would be 'a very important philosophical step in the history of our species,' he told the paper.”

I met him(wrote a thread on this the other week), and although he seems like an amazing 'down to Earth' guy, he's still 'typical'( cool.gif ), and 'Playing 'G-d' is going to backfire badly(real badly).
Thing I don't get is that this fella is so intelligent, and he is 'willing'(most willing) to risk what he even admits(he did on Nightline earlier) is the potential for things to go wrong....."go figure",, I guess its like why people climb mountains or something. unsure.gif

I've looked briefly into Judaic Mysticism,, and I can only say that 'messing with the Codes of Life', is worse than 'not good'- its down-right deadly.

Other than the 'Abominations' that we may see(if we live that long), I ask anyone on this site(challenge them even), to dis-prove these 'theories' of Quantum Entanglement,, because playing around with D.N.A. and such, will Attract 'Things'( ph34r.gif ) in Space....toward us(if we're so lucky).

The 'NAME' of 'G-d' is written into our D.N.A.,, all of Space is thriving with D.N.A. of its own kind(but its all connected by Cosmological Genetics/Sono-Luminescence), so this is Desecration of 'G-d',, and payback is going to be very difficult to deal with.

Someone has to do it right? sad.gif

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is arguably the first example of science fiction that we have. It seems that science has finally caught up to (or is about to do so) the first example of this genre. Dr. Frankenstein didn't learn then, and perhaps we won't now. At least we can hope that Venter doesn't fit the profile of the typical mad scientist.

I think that the likely danger is small considering that nature (through genetic mutation) is constantly altering genomes everywhere, all the time. And you can see what becomes of this. AIDs is a terrible disease yet the world is marshaling its efforts to combat this pandemic and so it would with anything that might escape laboratories and run amuck. However, if the researchers are not careful they will have the full force of the world's condemnation come down upon them.

There's always the glamor aspect to being the first to do anything. But adding to our knowledge of the world is, in my opinion, one of the most laudable things a person can do, especially if it is knowledge that is to be used to improve the human condition or to combat evil. Isn't it better that people you know and trust be the pioneers rather than outlaws whom you certainly don't?

Etc.  Etc.

I think that THAT will fall on mostly deaf ears (though I would not include mine). However, you can always say 'I told you so,' though it may then be too late. Isn't there a Chinese curse that goes: May you live in interesting times!

I think there is hope for "mad" scientists. The problem is that we have too many "dumb" (shortsighted) scientists.

Yes, clearly all scientific research allowed to go ahead must receive an "all-green" signal from Judaic Mysticism.

'messing with the Codes of Life',  is worse than 'not good'

Are you for real? If you think that the "Codes of Life" have not been messed with... you seem to be unaware of several fundamental aspects of biology. And I won't even bring the recombinant viral vaccines into the picture. I can understand why you might be leery of a completely synthetic organism. I am a little too. However, it's better this is created in the lab in your backyard in a controlled environment, rather than you finding out it can be done when you notice massive contamination of your water supply by some weaponized bacteria. Oh, and if you're worrying about

Then I suggest you destroy your immune system. Guess what? EVERY T and B cell in your body was "playing around with DNA" to help protect you from disease. Yeah, we'll attract abominations... once we cross the magical threshold of magnitude and attract their attention! Wow. tongue.gif
