The suspense is killing me.

I thought they were only going to test the beams this week, and weren't planning on colliding them at full power until early next year.

I think they should have waited until 2012 to start testing the LHC, just to scare the doomsayers ph34r.gif

i am afraid that i also read that the collision date is next year, so not much happening tomorrow except some lucky bugger gets to press the green button.

we need an insider...

I'd most certainly feel sorry for Imagination. wacko.gif

I voted, but only two votes in that nothing will happen.

There have already been indications of the Higgs, albeit at a low two sigma satistical significance. The Atlas will simply increase this statistic to a 5-6 sigma.

Because of delays at CERN I understand they will go straight to the high energies required once the beams are aligned.

All that will happen tomorrow is that there will be a beam going around the LHC at the energy it was injected at (a few GeV). There will be no collisions until the magnets have been calibrated properly. Then there will be low energy collisions, probably until the end of the year so the detectors and more importantly the triggers can be tested and calibrated. Sometime early next year the energy will start going up to the 14 TeV specified.

So when do they create the Earth eating black holes?
Or do they turn the planet into Silly String first?
Maybe I should check with UBetYourTuba(sp)?

Seriously though, will they have ceremony for pushing the button? It might be a good photo op for some politician or other official. Stuff like that can't hurt.

If something new and wonderful is discovered, I will never EVER understand what it is laugh.gif

I'm hoping something is though, I could at least understand the implications.

Can you imagine what the world would make of that photo if the LHC did produce a black hole which somehow (I dunno how) killed off 99% of the population and set us back to the dark ages?

It'd be captioned "The next time you do something incredibly stupid, just remember: At least you're not this guy."

UBetYourTuba(sp)?

It's Ubavontuba, which is a good thing. I'd have a hard time arguing with someone called "UBetYourTuba" much in the same way that I can't dislike "Ray Comfort".

Protons going around in a circle! We're going to die! wink.gif

Maybe we should beem it into space, with "Don't try this one at home folks" laugh.gif

I can hardly wait! In time they may confirm or disprove a lot of theories that are out. Personally, I hope they confirm those 10 or 11 dimensions.

On a lighter note, here is a rap tune that someone did about the collider. No kidding, the lyrics are all physics:

It's just dawned on me that the reason we have not discovered intelligent life, is that they all built their LHC's and completed the experiment.

ohmy.gif I think you may be right.

Maybe that's why they're abducting humans. So we can show them what went wrong with their LHCs. ph34r.gif

I heard France and Switzerland just vanished into a black hole. Shortly after they fired up the LHC. Oh wait, that was just the money that they had invested in the US mortgage debacle!

woop WHOOP! woop
