Chinese scientists are endeavoring to create a "space ecological chain" for long-time human survival in space by developing a regenerative environment-control and life-support system for manned space flight.

The task of space environment-control and life-support system is to create, in an enclosed environment in a spacecraft or on a planet base, an atmospheric environment similar to that on the Earth, so as to ensure that men can live healthily and work efficiently in space or on a planet base.

The system is classified into three categories, namely non- regenerative, physical-chemical regenerative and biological regenerative ones. Under the third category, photosynthesis of green plants are used to create an "ecological chain" to ensure the regeneration of oxygen, water and food for a human to live in space.

hmm. whole planet dynasties. the "united planet of north korea" threatening it's neighbors for more space burritos. sounds interesting..

maybe they are planning on doing this with the Shenzue module; as they keep launching and leaving half the shenzue's up there, they could build up a spacestation; sounds pretty innovative to me and for a fraction of the space activities cost america does things at!

Someone has to do it, i dont mind as long as its not one of those countries bent of military world domination (i.e. some middle eastern countries and north korea). China seeks world domination too but economical domination and thats ok, so far the US holds that crown and i dont mind at all if its taken away. Goooo chinks lead us into the space age =)

Has anyone considered the idea that the reason they can do it for less american dollars than America can is because they have a lot cheaper labor, they have more natural resources, and they use as high quality material as America does? Oh yes, and how much is it costing to leave all that up there and trust someone else (America) to bring your butt home when things go wrong.

Dealing with biological byproducts is an admirable and perhaps necessary goal, but I'm skeptical of a biosphere's utility.

Fundamentally we are talking about how to battle entropy. A certain amount of energy is used up in support of the crew and its mission, maintaining for them a hospitable environment (metabolism, recycling waste, etc.).

This energy can be applied to mechanical devices such as filters, or as the Chinese essay, to biological systems. The advantage of a biological system is that it can capture a broader array of energy (in terms of its form and intensity) than can a mechanical system, which would require a more concentrated power source such as a battery. It is similarly better at reconstituting a variety of waste into useful materials (e.g. nutrient and element cycles, food chains) but pays for this advantage with a more distributed system that requires more energy to obtain a given result.

The problem, therefore, is that to effectively capture energy and transmit it to sustain a highly complex being, viz. humans, a biological system must act on a massive scale. This is well and good on earth, where we are parked next to a large star that donates its radiant energy. In deep space, however, energy is not nearly as abundant.

I think that fundamentally, a self-sustained biological environment is on par with a perpetual motion machine.

This would appear to leave as our only option a mechanical system designed to support biological beings. However, its recycling would not be as effective as would a biological system's.

Before working too hard on a second earth, I think it behooves us to better define what it is we want to preserve -- is it "life" in its biological manifestation, or "intelligence?" If it is intelligence, then the vehicle is not as important, and an abiological form could be better preserved and transported away from earth.

Yup, they had to 'cheat' on the biosphere, several times.

For me the key word is: Try.

If it was up to me I would park all heavy industry at a Lx stable orbit and burst forth with dangerious over production without a thought to enviromentalisum while returning the earth to a park-like utopian garden like some kind of Maxfield Parish painting, chic people drinking elixers and knowing only pleasure while a race of grime covered robots provide all the needed resouces from their gothic orbital factories, etc...

But really, NO ONE expects the US to save their butts, especially with NASA's defective space shuttles grounded till mid next year. They know that if something goes wrong the chinkonauts die. Best they could do is pay the russians for help.

Its not only the cheap labor that makes their program less expensive than ours. The russians also run a significantly cheaper space program than we do. The fact of the matter is that NASA doesn't utilize its resources very well. A shuttle launch costs 3-7 times more than using capsules. While the shuttle is a much more versatile and robust system, do we really need to use one for every single mission? Would it not make more sense to use both in tandem as the mission specs require?

Ofc, my favorite idea is leaving a shuttle, or similar vehicle in orbit and launching crews and supplies via cheaper alternatives. Power it up and use it when needed, but leave it inert the rest of the time. And yes, I know that creates some complexities, but it would no doubt save tons of cash, and allow more missions for the same amount of funding, so it would be worthwhile.

America runs space.

Our society gives clues to the system in place. We all have heard the saying "He has more money than god." There is also an episode of the Simpsons where god meets Homer and says "I'm too old and rich for this."

This is the system on earth because this is the system everywhere.

An $80 sweater costs less than a dollar; tribute kicked upstairs vindicates the creative accounting.

I don't want to suggest the upper eschelons are evil and good is the fringe. But these individuals become wealthy exploiting those they hurt.

They have made it abundantly clear that doing business with evil (disfavored) won't help people. They say only good would have the ear, since evil is struggling for survival, and therefore only the favored could help.

The clues are there which companies are favored and which are disfavored, but they conceal it very hard because it is so crucial.

I offer an example of historical proportions:::

People point to Walmart and cry "anti-union".
Unions enable disfavored people to live satisfactorly without addressing their disfavor. This way their family's problems are never resolved. Without the union they would have to accept the heirarchy, their own inferiority.
Unions serve to empower.
Walmart is anti-union because they are good. They try to help people address and resolve their problems by creating an environment where there are fewer hurdles.

Media ridicule and lawsuits are creations to reinforce people's belief that Walmart is evil in a subsegment of the indistry dominated by the middle and lower classes.
Low-cost disfavored Chinese labor is utilized by corporate america to maximize margins. They all do it. Only WalMart gets fingered because they are the ones who help, and those who seek to create confusion in the marketplace want to eliminate the vast middle class who have a real chance and instead stick with lower classes who may not work otherwise. So they dirty him up while allowing the others to appear clean.

The middle class is being deceived. They are being misled into the unfavored, and subsequently will have no assistance from their purchases with corporate america.

The coining of the term "Uncle Sam" was a clue alluding to just this::Sam Walton's WalMart is one of few saviors of the peasant class.

“METOZ” is able to realize the cycle “deflection” and the cycle “straighening.” Both cycles are in accordance with current physic’s laws. “METOZ” as machine can not work and hand over the energy because it would be inconsonant to the law of conservation of energy.
