Absolutely. It's a simple matter of adding them to a list of blocked IP addresses in the server's firewall, or if this site is hosted, by a simple bot which can identify and block IP addresses from a seperate list.
Yes but those using a pool of IP addresses especially from dial-up, as exemplified with Robin Parsons, would be difficult to ban. You could just ban a range used by that poster, but that would potentially and unfairly ban others.
But how many people use STATIC IP addresses.
I don't, the forum knows me only because I let it place a cookie on my system.

That is true. Even the cable service I use rotates t he assigned IP addresses, albeit less frequently.

This board's software allows for blocking by IP or username from the Admin Control Panel, but it's tough for reasons stated above, not to mention spoofed IPs or insecure telnet servers. The best way to prevent sockpuppets would be for a group of moderators to be here most of the time so they'd get the feeel of a particular style...

When NAT came which allows people to hide a lot of computers behind only one IP number using port numbers for translating.
It destroyed the Idea of uniqueness.

A sockpuppet is someone who signs on under another (or more) user-id(s) to support their own position in a debate, as if they are a different person.

Forget banning IP addresses. I just found out that a certain individual that sent me a threatening email a few months ago, then shortly after was banned (really, not my fault! I didn't do it!) He came back as a sock puppet (or two, or three) and also recently sent somebody else here a threatening email from his new sock puppet identity, but the email had the exact same email address as the other email sent to me.
PROOF THAT ADMIN DOESN'T CARE. So okay, it is super simple to make a new email address and sign up again, but it isn't needed. Apparently you can make sock puppets over and over using the same email address.

Okay, I just got my bubble burst. It might be possible that a certain sockpuppet didn't register the 2nd sockpuppet with the same email address. I misunderstood.
But definitely something needs to be done. Creeps just keep coming back! Unfortunately, banning them permanently will also permanently ban some certain FM user sockpuppets, so maybe I should just keep my mouth shut?

If a threat is communicated, the target (victim) can secure an arrest warrant in the jurisdiction where the threat was received. If no information (including the suspect’s name) is known, a “John Doe” warrant can be issued. The point is if you feel threatened by a posting contact the police.
