Hello,
My name is Jeremy Toubl and I have a problem with my HDD. It doesn't start anymore and I want to get my information from it. It's a laptop hdd so I can't put another one along it. Anyone know how to solve my problem?
Thank you.
Sapo
Take it to a reputable technician.
John A
Buy a USB to 2.5 IDE adapter for the HDD.

Or reload windows.

That's moot if the drive doesn't spin up, eh?

Before taking the disk from the computer, you can try to test it by software. This software runs from a floppy or a CD - even if the HDD is dead or if your operating system doesn't boot. You may need to adjust the priorities your Bios to boot from the floppy or CD.

You have to know the manufacturer of the HDD. This is (or was) told by the Bios upon startup, before loading the operating system.

Then you get the testing programme from your HDD manufacturer. Here is a list:

Some test programmes accept to check other manufacturers unofficially.

Also, the UBCD (Universal Boot CD) has all these test programmes, but you must download a full CD, which may be lengthy depending on your connection.

However, if you don't hear your HDD spinning up, the test programme won't tell you much more than "no spin up" or "no drive detected"...

Adapters exist for 2.5" disks, either to USB as wrote John A, or to 3.5" P-Ata.

If the disk is somehow sound but your OS doesn't start, you can repair the OS, or boot one from a CD. If your data is on a NTFS volume, it's less easy, but you may use "Bart's PE Builder" to start an XP from a CD.

If the disk really has trespassed and you badly want to keep your data, some specialized companies do it. Expensive.

Crossing the fingers for you!

Good help, Enthalpy! But, I may have misunderstood the op.

I thought he said the "disk doesn't", not the "computer doesn't", but that's hard, even live! I probably shouldn't even try to do long-distance support, anyway. We assume he has a Microsoft infection? laugh.gif

Jeremy, what is exactly happening? What do you see on-screen when you try to boot? Many, many "et cetera" type questions may follow...

Sure, more detailed observations would help.

I had read "the disk" but I know from other forums it may be interpreted as "the computer" or "the OS" hence a more general answer.

Anyway, HDD diagnostic tools exist precisely to test the disk independently of other software - for which Microsoft is a high statistic probability.

The way I caught my first Microsoft OS resembles an infection, but meanwhile I tried better MS OS (= 2000) as well as (too briefly) some Linux variants, and I won't discredit MS. You know, my mother (72) uses that same computer, she started at 65, and I just can't imagine that with Linux. Mac maybe, but they have other drawbacks.

smile.gif I wonder why there's no Tech Support Forum here? laugh.gif

Can you imagine? ohmy.gif
