I would also add that Archimedes also invented a steam powered cannon that fired a small cannon ball capable of holing a vessel at up to 1/2 a kilometer. Recently demonstrated on the Discovery Channel. We are talking of 212 BC here folks.

Excellent experiment but not the best war strategy. They should have aimed at the sails. It goes to show quick feasibility studies are often wrong, because it does not take into consideration ingenuity in the field.
