http://www.physorg.com/news102055002.html This is precisely the sort of stupidity for which the media has become famous. Here they create a specious story about iPhone hoopla, a situation which can ONLY be created by media reporting. In other words, no media, no hoopla. As for Gartner and "industry analysts," they have persistently downplayed or warned about each new Apple event. And Apple continues to pull of the most innovative, powerful, attractive and valuable products in the marketplace. The media and the analysts have *always* been wrong about Apple. It"s death was predicted years ago. And currently they sit on over $4B in cash reserves. Not too shabby.

Most innovative? Highly debatable. If they were looking for innovation, in the case of the iPhone, then why not be innovative enough to use compatible standards with the market you are trying to make inroads into? Some of the marketing fluff over the iPhone is geared at competing with Blackberry in the world of business and IT, yet the iPhone poses a security risk, unreasonable storage demands on networks and does not use compatible and established protocols.
Then there are all the phone manufacturers who have also been working on similar phone designs prior to Apple who have designed there phone for this market and have done so properly. There are a few Linux based phones that would be much more functional and have more appeal, from a tech and IT standard, than Apple’s
Attractive and valuable? For commercial electronics, perhaps but I seem to remember Apple’s pride years ago in regards to slamming the x86 architecture and “other” operating systems. I think you missed the fact that if Apple did not change to more reliable technology, the predictions of its failure would have come to pass.
Hopefully for their sake and the sake of their users, Apple will make version 2 and 3 of the iPhone compatible with the devices they are trying to replace. They will also have to give up their normal “Our way or no way” attitude if they wish to play ball in the world of business and IT in regards to their phones replacing PDAs and Blackberry devices.
From an IT POV, the iPhone is flash and fluff. It may be able to change that POV based on real-world use.
