Skype is not free. They give you a free small credit to start with then they charge you to use the service.
Skype was free last year (within US and Canada).
I used it most of the year and had GREAT success with it.
This year I had to pay $14 for a years worth of outgoing calls from my computer (where ever I am in the country).
I paid $20 a year for a normal home phone number that anyone can call for free.
I bought two, one is local to where I live and the other is local to my kids.
So, for $54 for a years worth of QUALITY calling and the use of two different area codes, I think its a pretty good deal.
I have one last purchase to make and that is a wireless VOIP router that will allow me to use Skype with my normal wireless handsets but without the computer. Should cost ~$60 and once that's working I will drop my land line. I've already saved FAR more than Skype cost by reducing the number of monthly minutes I was signed up for.

Skype can be free
It all depends on the question
If used as a messenger computer to computer or even computer to wi fi skype phone skype is free
As a voip service- it was free within north america but not the rest of the world
Overall for the $ 15 or 30 $ spent it is very good value
The investment for a good quality headset makes all the difference in the world
My grandmother used to tell me " nothing is for nothing"
Don't expect good phone service for free
For free try icall.com
