Alternative energy studies and programs and development has been around now, for such a long time. How slow this train (of thought)is in coming to the fore!
I cant wait to see more money put into these new forms of energy for mans future! We have the ability to tap into natures resources for our energy needs! How long since we knew we could use water for energy...Niagra Falls comes to my mind...about a hundred years now?
How many years has it been since man knew we could tap into the power grid known as the sun...and apply new technologies to solar energy studies, to replace coal and other sources such as oil, and propane?
How long have we been avoiding the fact that what we are doing is greatly damaging the atmosphere we need to be balanced, in order just to breathe with ease. What of the new wind turbines and do they produce ample energy for a lower cost than our families who are obviously in Irac, waging war because of oil as an energy source some felt we still need?

How long before some people lend money to developers of alternative energies such as the latest i read of Capturing the energy of a wave with small converters floating, and bobbing softly upon vast expanses of the ocean ?

They speak in this article of capturing the carbon dioxide emissions but it seems to me that we know how to produce a whole range of energy sources that may not produce much CO2.

Sometimes my friends and I just look about bewildered at the waste of time and resources all around us and the uninventiveness in politics as to where our tax money"s should be spent.

Why do some people go through life escaping logic, day after day, while they pat themselves on the back for a job well done.
We need to stop using the sources we have come to rely upon as soon as we can and begin a new world order where "alternative" energy becomes just ENERGY. The results will be the same minus some horrible pollutants in the air we breathe.
And maybe less fighting for resources we no longer even need, and havent for such a ridiculous amount of time really, when one thinks on it a bit.

good day all!

It should also be noted that one of the main causes of California's last power shortage/outage problems were placed at the feet of the large data storage farms using millions of disk drives to run the internet. Imagine the oil, pollution, equipment, and labor cost savings by using just ONE multi-terabyte or petabyte disk drive. President Bush says energy and oil dependency cost have to come down in America and alternative sources for saving energy must be identified.

One Multi-Terabyte disk drive could save more than 900,000 watts hour by replacing a thousand or more hard drives each requiring on average 3 amps of continuous power usage. That breaks down into 3A * 5V/12v or 15 watts per minute * 60 = 900 watts an hour. World wide approximate power usage is 900 watts/hour * 500,000,000 drives = 450 x 10^9 watts hour (50,000,000 new drive every year). Power and energy conservation will play an important role in the 21st century as energy dollar resources become critical black outs and brown outs.

We must also replace many other archaic and inefficient energy hog technologies still in use.

At datanumeric.com web design bangalore india we have found that by configuring our computer monitors to blank out if not used for 10 minutes and switching off all computer systems after office hours we can reduce the power bill quite a bit.

I dont know if I agree with that.. I think that California being to STUPID to allow any new power plants to be built for how many years might be the simple REASON for it's lack of power problems, things such as, Killing projects like the Auburn Dam, just so people can paddle down the American River singing born free without a dam in the way... not to mention, allowing Rancho Seco to restart after sitting for TEN YEARS and doing nothing more than proving a nice small lake and a park to boat and fish in.. then letting SMUD (The owner of Rancho Seco) spend 660 MILLION of dollars to update it for restart.. then when its almost done.. THEY CANX. THE RESTART LICENSE... MORONS.. need more.. just visit Kalifornia.. California demands NO NEW COAL PLANTS in Kalifornia, BUT!, it's OK to BUY POWER from coal plants both new and old in other states.. so as long as its not in California's own yard its A OK!... any state that allows this type of STUPIDITY to go on year after year deserves to live in the dark..

Your calculations are wrong.

A) disk drives take less power (the new 750 GB 7200 RPM drive from Seagate draws but 12 watts during a seek, 9 when not (more than 1/2 the time) and less than one in idle mode.

http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.asp...cleid=827&cid=4

B ) Power is rated in Watts per HOUR, thus a kWh is 1000 watts for 1 hour. Thus a device like the Seagate drive which uses ~10 watts average will use 0.01 KwH

100 of these drives would consume 1 kWh
1,000 would consume 10 kWhs
10,000 would consume 100 kWhs
100,000 would consume 1,000 kWhs or 1 Megawatt an hour.
1,250,000 would consume 12.5 MegaWatts but would also equal a Petabyte of storage (a million Gigabytes).

12.5 MegaWatts is equal to ~ 1% of a large Power Plant.

California has a LOT of large Power plants.

California's power problems were not caused by large data storage farms.

Ummmmm... WRONG! Perhaps a little research is necessary (re: Enron, et. al.) before knee-jerk blaming.

At the height of our power problems there was plenty of power available for California. The problems stemmed from deregulation of the power industry and President Bush reversing laws preventing the eggregious manipulations of the market performed by the power traders.
