Here we go again, someone wants to kill all the gorillas now. They probably say the same of humans and we have a whole gamit of bugs

Kong is dead.
Well. that's just too bad. Obviously the best way to control AIDS in the human population is to kill all the gorillas, and we need to start TODAY!! Tell you what, any gorillas come into my yard this afternoon I'm going to kick their butts.

And another thing: I've noticed that a lot of people are lactose intolerant these days. Obviously the best way to deal with this problem is to kill all the cows. What the hell - I need more fish in my diet anyway.

Ummm, who said they were killing gorillas? Or that this disease was even a threat to us? Damn hippies.

????

The disease was first detected among a small number of homosexuals in California in 1981. It has since killed around 25 million people

Umm,.... so if AIDS came from monkeys in Africa, why were homosexuals in California the first to get it??
Maybe more to do with the Hepatitis vaccines that were tested on homosexuals at that time. sad.gif

I think this has been a big muddle for a long time.
Retroviruses have function so when they find so called SIV in apes it doesn't mean it makes them sick just as finding HIV in humans doesn't mean they'll get sick.
I've got friends diagnosed with HIV who haven't had any medication for over a decade.

Here they found SIV comes out when baboons get pregnant, SIV is supposed to do this because it helps to the trophoblastic cells attach the fetus to the placenta.

"Electron microscopic studies have revealed the presence of endogenous retroviral (ERV) particles in normal primate placental tissues. These particles have ultrastructural similarities to type C retroviral particles and are mainly associated with the trophoblast. In normal human placental tissues, they have antigenic similarity with exogenous retroviruses, such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and may have a role to play in the regulation of cellular gene expression, syncytiotrophoblast formation or pregnancy-related immunosuppression."

"The results of this study confirm the specific expression of retroviral cross-reactive antigens in normal baboon placental tissues and suggest placental cellular proteins may have antigenic similarity with those recognized by anti-HIV/SIV antibodies. The role of these retroviral-related proteins expressed at the maternal-fetal interface remain unclear."
Characterization of antigens expressed in normal baboon trophoblast and cross-reactive with HIV/SIV antibodies.

I hope no one is nuts enough to think the gorillas have HIV because rumours spread like wild fire in Africa and there is no one to stop a cull.

OK. That's it. No one have sex or share drug needles with gorillas or chimpanzees. Holding hands is still OK.

Serious. How did AIDS originally spread? Bestiality happens with humans and there is interspecies sex.

I am by no means an expert on the subject, but my guess is it was either blood transfusions (which are relatively common in research), or unsterilized equipment.

A perfection of means, and confusion of aims, seems to be our main problem.
