.9 repeating, add one divided by + and - infinity = 0 blink.gif
Nick
One.

what in the hell are u talking about

God bless you. Remember, we do have a decimal system.

Two plus one divided by infinity.

So, (repeated 9) >
99999999999999999999999999

add 1 >

1.9999999999999999999999999

divided by infinity >

/ (an eight on its back)

= 1

Any finite number divided into infinity gives you next to nothing... so i suppose it is sound... but... what was the point?
Nick
It is the mathematical point.

I think there was a poll on something like this, but a bit different in the "Puzzling Questions" forum (http://forum.physorg.com/index.php?showtopic=13177).

The point was, Nick's math does not work in either
  • the Reals, where infinity is not a number
  • the Hyperreals or Surreals, where 1/infinity = epsilon > 0.

It does work in the Affinely Extended Reals, but for the trivial reason that 1/infinity = 0 and 0.999... already equals 1.

But Nick's classical 1-line post doesn't allow him to state what number system he is using. His attempt to sloganize everything actually demonstrates a lack of thought rather than pithy wisdom.

The point was, Nick's brain does not work in either

  • the Real world, where stupidity is his number
  • the Hyperreal or Surreal world, where 1/infinity = required sanity > Nick's

It does work in A Finely Inverted Reality, but for the trivial reason that 0.999... already equals 42 and so a one-liner just saying "One" is the ultimate answer to everything.
