i just heared about this news in twoweeks later: The sun will raise in west?????? ohmy.gif
anything true?? in this news blink.gif

You should always link to the source of your information if you want an opinion of its reliability.

The sun will not rise in the west* **.

* Except for a tiny region near the poles near the solstices, but this happens every year and is in no way important. http://www.thomasbending.co.uk/puzzles/geometry/sunrise.htm

** Also Roland Emmerich is making a film called "2012." Since he got all the facts wrong in "10,000 BC" the sun very well might rise in the west in this film, but as above, this is in no way important.

Had to think on that a second. My first thought was "which direction is West of the North Pole?" unsure.gif

But then realized that you said NEAR the poles. cool.gif

Do you suppose the OP's question had to do with another thread around here recently about the magnetic poles flipping and compasses pointing the wrong way?

2012 having any kind of spontaneous physical consequence is highly unlikely.

John Major Jenkins has studied Mayan mythology and symbology and concluded that the Mayans were aware of a celestial alignment that would take place in the "2012 era". The alignment regards the winter solstice sun and the center of the Milky Way galaxy, the famed December 21st, 2012, 11:11 UTC date. The truth of the matter is that the most precise alignment actually took place on the winter solstice of 1998, hence the term "2012 era". Any significant implications of such an astrological alignment have no scientific backing. This event only happens once every 26,000 years, as a result of the precessional motion of the Earth on its spin axis.

As to the OP's question, many people have been going around screaming about an impending polar reversal (geomagnetic field flip-flop). Yes, it's well established that we are currently experiencing or on the verge of experiencing a polar reversal. The only catch is that our models of the geodynamo (the mantle/core boundary deep in the earth responsible for generating the Earth's magnetic field) estimate that any reversal will be an extensive, gradual process requiring at least 3,000 to 30,000 years to complete. Most paleomagnetic records also confirm this, but there are a few anomalies where an extremely rapid change in magnetic field declination and orientation was recorded by the cooling lava, but it may have just been a local phenomenon.

Even after the reversal, the sun would still rise in the East, because we'd simply keep delineating that direction labeled 'East'. In fact, the Earth's North pole is actually akin to the South pole of a magnet (the Earth's North pole was originally mislabeled), so when drawing the Earth's magnetic field lines, the arrows actually point outwards from the South pole.

Most importantly, a polar reversal does NOT entail the Earth's rotation slowing to a halt, and then starting up again in the opposite direction.

All that said, I secretly hope that the Mayans were right and 2012 delineates a point in history where there is a major shift of the human psyche towards oneness and peace. ohmy.gif

If your on Earth and the Earth is spinning and pointed towards the sun, then the sun rises in the East..Got that?

Okay, if you go out in space a little further and a giant scoop of Orange sherbet is there, on tenth less the size of Jupiter, denser and is coming at Earth from the direction of the Kuniper Belt, then this would be in our away position, from the sun.

If you dont understand this, then write the military. They know everything and will give you an answer, as to wheather this ball olf ice cream will hit us?

Well by Zerkoff's "reasoning" gravity is magnetism. So we'll all fall off ph34r.gif

We're talking about a ball to the right of then a ball to the left.

Damned' that's one big moth!

No, not 2 weeks later, but 3 times every million years.

Check out my post about it.
