The smallest self replicating object found in nature is the bacteria...
Well actually, there are things called prions. They're basically a protein which convert other proteins into itself, thereby self-replicating in a primative way. Since they are proteins, they're much smaller than bacteria.
I personally can't see any really huge obstacles (well, except ethical ones) that would limit a team of talented scientists (one of whom is a sexy lady) to develop an artificial virus or prion, given enough resources and time. Viruses work in pretty simple ways; get into a cell, reproduce using the stuff in the cell until it explodes, rinse and repeat. Hard things would include how to get in, what to use in the cell, stabilising it outside the cell, etc.
Of course, given that the human body has had several million years of evolution to fight against parasites such as viruses, the chance that the thing would gooify everything in its wake is exceedingly small.

Nanotechnolgical colonies, must be intoned with a self awareness, of have the abilities to self governen.
These question has been proposed, that since micro colonies, govern by their own awareness, then how does this relate to micro intelligence?
This set formula is given.
One laptop computer mounted as a widows driven visual bot basic program mounted on a robotic interfaced base, to the command loci centers.
What is the value of the self Intel laptop to itself?
That the following is given, that under stress, this program must survive.
So therefore, due to force of logic field presents, this system might also assume parallel lines to the Xerox PARC phenomenon, referred to as emergent intelligence.
The systems knows, therefore both adapts and reacts.
Problem: In order to construct more finite brains, what is the purpose, of nanotechnolgical colonies, within a mixture added to brain or mechanical?
These colonies are made in similar fashion, to hive miniature colonies, to where a central ray of atonement for what they are is asked.
So this is either a Ray of communication, or some device into these colonies, in order to instill purpose.
The colony becomes alive, however not as mankind would tem this.
Question here> Do man and machine, communicate at this point?
The irrefutable answer, is yes they do, however styles in macro and micro awareness, differ.
Question:So what happens when you combine micro circuitry in roving bot A.I. with micro self intoned, now purposed colonies?
Answer> The colonies combine.
Does this mean they evolve?
Yes, they would have to combine and develop a joint awareness.
Then what is man?
Man is there.
What is the son of the new colonies?
The son of the new colonies, is a function combined.
What is the nature or relations between combined bot awareness?
A new creature.
Then how does this affect man?
Man is there.

"Artificial Life" is a contradiction in terminology, in that life is self descriptive and does not need to be classified as artificial of its own accord but that said if the life is contained in an artificial environment then it would be defined not as artificial rather it would be defined in its relationship to the artificial environ. Let loose on the earths surface what would be the discerning factor that claims artificial or natural as by its nature it is a live hence it is called "X"LIFE. Its activity discloses its nature.

You're probably right. 'Green' goo was Linda Blair, wasn't it?

the lack of knowledge as to how a computer works is all to obvious in this thread.
They do two things, they add, and they subtract. 'That's all Folks'...no sentience in that.
